Position Title: Social Services & Thrift Store Coordinator

Corps/Department: Salvation Army, Sitka Corps

Reports To: Corps Officer

FLSA Status: Part Time; Non-Exempt

Hours: 25 hours a week

Scope of Position: This position supports the Corps Officer in Social Service work by taking on many of the transport, stocking and cleaning duties. In most cases, the employee will be helping volunteers. Provide assistance to the Thrift Store to fill-in as Store Clerk, Cashier, Stock, and any other duties required as a Thrift Store Clerk. Manage and assist volunteers and fill-in as a cook as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:



  1. Must be at least 21 years of age with a current driver's license with acceptable driving and criminal history reports.
  2. Prior work or volunteer experience in food service, grocery service or retail. (Preferred).
  3. Current State of Alaska Food Workers Card required or ability to obtain before within 30 days of employement.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  5. Demonstrated ability to followi instructions.
  6. Must perform duties efficiently and demonstrate good


Essential Functions:



  1. Coordinate with the Corps Officers in menu preparation, receiving donations, ordering, and storing food.
  2. Daily pick up food donations from local grocery stores and deliver to the Corps Community Center.
  3. Prepare the appropriate foods, hot or cold, in a timely fashion according to the weekly meal plan.
  4. Assure all foods are stored in a safe and sanitary manner, to include dates and labeling of usable food items for future use.
  5. Wash pots and pans using the three-pot sink method for cleaning and sanitizing dinnerware, utensils, and the like.
  6. Clean and sanitize all equipment used daily, keep the entire area neat and clean. Sweep and mop floors, as directed.
  7. Responsible for notifying the Corps Officers on duty of any problems or concerns related to stock levels and food spoilage.
  8. Supervise and give direction to volunteers in the Soup Kitchen.
  9. Assist volunteer cooks with soup kitchen preparation as needed.
  10. Build Food pantry food boxes under direction of Corps Officer or authorized volunteer.
  11. Keep food pantry and soup kitchen storage neat and tidy and up-to-date.
  12. Maintain TEFAP inventory.
  13. Transport items to other agencies, including refuse, recycling, and donations.
  14. Assist in transporting kettles and toys during Christmas season.
  15. Pick up mail from the post office.
  16. Assist Thrift Store management and able to fill Thrift Store Clerk as needed.
  17. Take deposit to the bank.
  18. Assist with all other related duties as assigned.



    Protect the Mission: Must complete the online course for this area and pass the Background Checks required by The Salvation Army for employment.

    Driver Requirements: Must be a licensed driver with an acceptable driving history. Must also complete and pass The Salvation Army Driver Safety Course.

    Work Environment: Work is performed primarily indoors, with a lot of short distance driving.

    Physical Demands:



    1. Ability to speak, sit, walk, stand, bend, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent basis; to grasp, reach, handle, finger, push or pull objects.



    1. Ability to see and hear at normal ranges with corrective devices, if necessary.



    1. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., or more with assistance.
    2. Ability to operate a motor vehicle in daylight, darkness, or in inclement weather conditions.
