The UCSD Department of Pharmacology is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers investigate the molecular basis of human diseases. The faculty are internationally renowned for their strength in elucidating basic cellular and molecular mechanisms of signal transduction that lead to innovative drug target identification and ultimately to drug discovery. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines, and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. Under direction, the Staff Research Associate 4 will serve as an independent scientific leader for the Tukey lab in the Department of Pharmacology. The incumbent will engage in difficult and complex research experiments, leading to significant contributions to the lab's projects related to drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and toxicology. Incumbent will be responsible for the development of new experiments, design and implementation of new methodologies, execution and troubleshooting experiments to address basic and complex research problems to accomplish goals of the lab. Interpret and analyze data yielded by new/original methods, ensure that statistical analysis and rigor and reproducibility meets standard criteria. This position is afforded significant latitude for complex research projects, decision-making and independent judgment. Independently analyze data, perform statistical analysis and contribute content for the preparation of laboratory manuscripts for publication and grant applications. Instruct and assist postdoctoral fellows and graduate students in research techniques and protocols, and use of complex equipment. Maintain experimental and lab records, supplies and equipment. Other duties assigned as needed.

• Extensive theoretical knowledge of and direct experience with cell biology, molecular biology, pharmacology, toxicology and/or related science acquired through a combination of education and experience.

• Demonstrated skill and direct experience in a variety of molecular biology, analytical chemistry and pharmacokinetics techniques.

• Experience with in vitro and in vivo models of hepatotoxicity, cell culture, mass spectrometry and chromatography, drug metabolism and protein & RNA analysis.

• Demonstrated ability to design, develop and execute innovative and significant experimental research.

• Demonstrated experience interpreting, troubleshooting and analyzing results of scientific experiments.

• Ability to effectively document complex research procedures, accurately record experimental details and results, perform mathematical calculations necessary for data analysis, prepare graphs and figures to summarize results and write reports.

• Ability to prepare, interpret and present the results of scientific experiments in the pursuit of specific research goals and for the publication of experimental results in peer reviewed scientific journals.

• Excellent positive interpersonal skills. Ability to work with faculty, students and staff in a diverse group.

• Ability to direct, advise and coordinate projects among laboratory personnel. Provide direction and guidance to lab members on experimental design and research methods.

• Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards.

• Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.
