Job Description
Position Summary: The HR Generalist - Compliance is a key member of the Human Resources (HR) Employment Relations team supporting the operational compliance needs of Michigan Medicine University of Michigan Health entities, including but not limited to UMH-Sparrow and UMH-West. Reporting to the Employment Relations Manager, this role is jointly created to serve both Michigan Medicine Corporate Compliance and the UMH Regional HR teams. This position will ensure the execution of HR-related compliance programs across multiple domains including HIPAA, labor law, health and safety, regulatory documentation, workforce education, and mandatory reporting. The HR Generalist will also partner closely with HR Business Partners (HRBPs) to support investigations, audits, corrective actions, and compliance-related communication and education. Key Responsibilities: HIPAA Privacy & Operational Compliance Support
- Serve as the single point of contact for HR regarding HIPAA incidents and inquiries from Corporate Compliance.
- Coordinate HIPAA incident investigations across Regional HR teams, including intake, tracking, and timely resolution. Monitor and ensure adherence to investigation timelines, documentation of mitigation steps, and corrective actions.
- Maintain and update incident tracking documentation and ensure accurate and secure storage of supporting records.
- Identify and assist in communication with leadership and process owners to support compliance program objectives.
- Support initiatives related to education, policy updates, onboarding, orientation content, hotline trends, offboarding, recredentialing processes, and targeted training at the direction of Corporate Compliance or HR.
- Assist in developing ongoing compliance metrics (e.g., access audits, incident response time, education participation rates).
- Liaise with the CAI (Compliance Audits and Investigations) and CEE (Compliance Engagement and Effectiveness) segments of Corporate Compliance as well as other key stakeholders to respond to reports and inquiries.
General HR Compliance Support
- Ensure compliance with federal and state labor law postings across regional entity worksites, coordinating updates and replacements as needed.
- Assist in managing flu vaccination compliance, ensuring proper documentation, tracking, and employee notifications in coordination with Occupational Health and Infection Prevention.
- Track and manage I-9 reverification deadlines, ensuring proactive outreach and timely completion of necessary documentation.
- Develop, maintain, refine, and implement workflows as well as standard operating procedures for tracking and maintaining compliance across the regional entities.
Support to HR Business Partners (HRBPs)
- Partner with HRBPs in supporting compliance related cases, employee relations matters, labor relations matters, disciplinary actions, and documentation.
- Serve as a subject matter resource for HRBPs regarding compliance requirements and workflows.
Assist in coordination and standardization of compliance processes across regional sites to align with Michigan Medicine policies and procedures.

Work Experience |
* Minimum of 3 years of HR or compliance experience in a healthcare or highly regulated setting * Experience in a healthcare system or academic medical center, preferred |
Education |
* Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Healthcare Administration, Compliance, Business, or related field |
Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
* Familiarity with healthcare systems, policies, or HR structure, preferred * Experience with compliance tracking tools, case management platforms, or HRIS, preferred * Knowledge of I-9 compliance, OSHA, and CDC workforce health mandates, preferred |
