Job Summary

The laboratory of Professor Bil Clemons in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Caltech is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Research Technician to support both experimental research and essential lab operations. This role combines hands-on scientific work in membrane protein biochemistry and structural biology with key responsibilities in lab management, safety compliance, and equipment maintenance. The ideal candidate is collaborative, highly organized, and enthusiastic about contributing to a cutting-edge academic research environment.

Essential Job Duties
  • Express, purify, and characterize recombinant membrane proteins from bacterial and eukaryotic systems.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques such as plasmid preparation, cloning, and mutagenesis.
  • Conduct standard protein biochemistry assays, including SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, and quantification.
  • Prepare buffers and reagents, and maintain quality and consistency in laboratory solutions.
  • Order and track laboratory supplies, manage inventory, and handle shipping/receiving of materials.
  • Coordinate equipment service, repairs, and preventative maintenance; manage service contracts.
  • Oversee calibration and cleaning schedules for shared instrumentation.
  • Maintain compliance with laboratory safety protocols and Caltech EH&S guidelines.
  • Conduct and document safety trainings for new lab members; update chemical hygiene plans as needed.
  • Assist in onboarding new lab members and maintain documentation of standard lab procedures.
  • Participate in data management, recordkeeping, and lab meeting discussions.
  • Perform other duties as necessary to support the efficient functioning of the lab.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 1 year of hands-on lab experience, especially in molecular biology or biochemistry.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills with close attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently or collaboratively.
  • Familiarity with general lab operations, equipment upkeep, and inventory systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with membrane protein purification and detergent handling.
  • Prior exposure to FPLC (e.g., AKTA systems), liposome preparation, or structural biology techniques.
  • Understanding of laboratory safety practices and EH&S compliance.
  • Experience coordinating lab logistics, equipment service, or chemical tracking software.
  • Familiarity with Caltech purchasing and lab administration systems is a plus.

Hiring Range

$18.50 - $24.75 Per Hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
