Responsibilities
Forest View Hospital, located just seven miles southeast of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a private 108 bed psychiatric facility that serves children, adolescents and adults. We are licensed by the State of Michigan, fully accredited by The Joint Commission and we bring more than 50 years of experience to the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of behavioral health problems. As a part of our continued success and growth, we are seeking qualified applicants for a Chief Nursing Officer CNO position. The Chief Nursing Officer will be a key member of the Forest View Hospital Leadership Team who will integrate and coordinate a patient centric nursing strategy with a keen focus on both admissions and patient care; ensuring that delivery of high-quality and cost-effective health care is consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Universal Health Services and in accordance with government regulation, licensing and accreditation requirements. The CNO will participate in the hospital's strategic planning and contributes to the achievement of institutional goals and objectives.This position interfaces closely with the hospital's medical staff, nursing staff, other department heads, as well as referring agencies and payers. The Chief Nursing Officer will focus on 5 key areas: People, Service, Quality, Growth, and Finance. Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Develops and achieves departmental goals and objectives within the overall strategic plan of the hospital/corporation.
- Provides leadership and accountability for the budget, staffing levels, FTE's, and works closely with the CEO as the annual budget is developed.
- Participates in Hospital Budget Development and specifically determines budget allocations for nursing practice/patient care needs in the following areas:
- Human Resources
- Equipment and Supplies
- Recruitment/Retention
- Professional Development
- Plans, directs and evaluates activities of all nursing departments.
- Writes performance appraisals, corrective actions and improved performance plans based on specific and consistent standards as observed by the CEO.
- Selects, trains, supervises and retains qualified staff.
- Performs job evaluations on a timely basis in accordance with review dates and hospital policy.
- Effectively manages workload, completes assignments within specified time frame and delegates as appropriate.
- With assistance from the Intake Manager:
- Ensures accurate information of daily census and potential admission information. Attends administrative meetings to present critical information around census, waiting lists, and review potential patients and program as it pertains to the admission process.
- Monitors the daily logging of Inquiry Calls, referral requests and admissions into Midas System.
- Disseminates additional clinical information related to potential patient to appropriate staff for discussion of concerns and admission approval.
- Communicates pertinent information to managers/directors in timely manner prior to admission.
- Oversees admission assessment and advises on appropriate referrals for patients that are not clinically appropriate for admission to facility.
- Provides clinical advisement regarding the assignment of admission; with consideration of the following factors:
- Complexity of patient needs
- Competency/knowledge level of staff members
- Safety for the treatment population as a whole
- Infection Control
- Geographical proximity to needed resources
- Partners in marketing activities as appropriate.
- Effectively communicates with referral sources.
- Demonstrates knowledge and location of all admission records, intake folders and release of information forms.
- Demonstrates knowledge of state licensing regulations, contractual requirements, CARF standards, HIPAA policy, ordinances, laws, and other regulations required of his/her position and acts
- Actively participates in the daily functions of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
- Respects confidentiality of patient and employee information.
- Maintains a courteous and professional manner in dealing with patients, family members, visitors, physicians, and co-workers.
- Handles emergencies, pressures, and stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
- Effectively manages workload, completes assignments within specified time frame and delegates as appropriate.
- Maintains open line of communication. Utilizes written and oral communication in a clear, appropriate and timely manner.
- Supervises comprehensive provision of clinical services by all clinical departments.
- Functions as the Administrator On-Call, as needed and takes calls for the special departmental needs.
- Guides development, implementation and evaluation of programs for continued education and professional growth of nursing staff members.
- Manages information systems by designing, implementing and retaining essential records and reports.
- Plans for delivery of nursing care, evaluation of patient care, improvement in the healthcare delivery systems, and staffing/scheduling of personnel to meet patient needs.
- Maintains an up to date knowledge and practice of nursing trends and new developments in the field of nursing.
- Affiliates with various accredited nursing programs and coordinates the nursing students clinical rotation at Forest View Hospital.
- Demonstrates initiative in promoting customer service, problems solving, and ensuring continuous quality improvement.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and performs within limits of policies and procedures.
- Conforms to facility policy regarding notification of absence or tardiness, PTO (use of sick time, vacations, and holidays), overtime.
- Relates with Board members as a participant in the Governing Body, community and governmental agencies.
- Works with other departments in improving methods and/or procedures that may affect patient care directly or indirectly.
- Maintains good public relations at all times.
- Oversees clinical Performance Improvement programs, which evaluate the quality and appropriateness of services, in compliance with Joint Commission standards. Attends and participates on the Performance Improvement Committee; evaluates reports regarding PI monitoring, as well as corrective action plans and target dates for completion.
- Coordinates and monitors the hospital's utilization of pharmacy and laboratory services.
- Participates in special projects, committees, Performance Improvement Teams, etc.,
- Understands individual responsibilities for safety and infection control and carries out responsibilities as defined in policy and procedures manuals.
- Provide departmental trainings as needed.
- Provide supervision and support to departmental staff as needed and required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Master's degree in Nursing preferred; Bachelor's degree required with oversight by Master's level leadership.
- CPR/Handle with Care Certification.
- CPR certification.
- Licensure: Current license or permit to practice professional nursing in the state of MI.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of behavioral health nursing clinical practices and management. Experience with a free-standing inpatient setting is strongly preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of principles and practices relevant to nursing and patient care activities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of effective management and supervisory practices. Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.
- Three or more years of progressive nursing management experience in behavioral health setting preferred.
- Ability to plan, direct, and monitor others' activities with demonstrated leadership abilities that contribute to a positive work environment.
