Job Summary

The LANDTIE Research Lab at Georgia Southern University is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to contribute to cutting-edge research in advanced nondestructive evaluation (NDE), manufacturing methodologies, and material characterization. The successful candidate will work on federally funded projects (NIST, NSF, DOT) involving the integration of AI, robotics, and data science into experimental and theoretical NDE and smart manufacturing systems. Responsibilities include conducting independent research, publishing results, mentoring students, and contributing to interdisciplinary collaborations in advanced sensing and materials testing.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct original research in advanced nondestructive evaluation (NDE), structural health monitoring, and smart manufacturing systems
  • Design and execute experiments involving ultrasonic, electromagnetic, and other material testing techniques
  • Develop and apply computational models (e.g., finite element or wave propagation simulations) for defect detection and materials analysis
  • Integrate AI, machine learning, and robotics into NDE and manufacturing processes for automation and data-driven insights
  • Analyze experimental and simulation data to derive performance metrics and improve system design
  • Write and publish peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and project deliverables for sponsors including NIST, NSF, and DOT
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students, supporting their contributions to collaborative research tasks
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences, workshops, and internal program review meetings


Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field (must be completed by the start date of the appointment)

Required Experience
  • Demonstrated research experience in nondestructive evaluation (NDE), material characterization, or advanced manufacturing
  • Hands-on experience with experimental techniques, such as ultrasonic testing, electromagnetic sensing, or related NDI methods
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research, analyze data, and publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience with technical writing, including reports, proposals, or academic publications

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Educational Qualifications
  • Ph.D. with a focus on nondestructive evaluation (NDE), advanced manufacturing, ultrasonic testing, robotics, or AI/data science applications in engineering.

Preferred Experience
  • Academic or professional experience involving interdisciplinary research, including theoretical modeling and experimental validation
  • Experience working on or with federally funded research projects (e.g., NIST, NSF, DOE, DOT)


Proposed Salary

$54,000

This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.

  • Knowledge of data acquisition, signal processing, and automation tools used in smart manufacturing environments

  • Experience integrating AI, machine learning, or robotics into engineering research or manufacturing systems
  • Experience collaborating on federally funded projects (e.g., NIST, NSF, DOT, DOE)
  • Prior involvement in interdisciplinary teams and mentoring students or junior researchers
