Job Summary
In close collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) will lead the creation, refinement, and execution of a comprehensive strategic plan that aligns Denver Health's capabilities, systems, and initiatives with its long-term vision and strategic priorities. This role is pivotal in shaping both internal and external strategies, with an emphasis on externally facing strategy that reflects and advances our commitment to our Vision of becoming Colorado's most trusted healthcare organization and helps to achieve other priorities as identified by the CEO. The CSO will work alongside senior leaders to support execution, foster accountability, and support the evolution of strategic plans across the organization, including the Denver Health Medical Plan, and within the local market. By connecting current strengths with emerging opportunities, the CSO will help position Denver Health for long-term, disciplined, and measurable success. A critical component in this role hinges on the ability to cultivate and grow powerful relationships with community partners and key stakeholders, positioning Denver Health for long-term impact and growth. Experience in a delivery system outside the safety net setting or other experience with delivery systems, such as strategy consulting, is a plus.
Essential Functions:
- External Strategy & Growth:
Lead the development of Denver Health's external market strategy, including building and strengthening partnerships with healthcare systems and evaluating growth and market expansion opportunities. Implement structures and processes for regularly evaluating local, regional, and state-wide market forces and translate insights into strategic priorities. (20%) - Strategic Transformation & Leadership:
Lead Denver Health's transformation toward becoming the most trusted healthcare provider in Colorado. Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive, organization-wide strategic planning process. Provide thought leadership and insights grounded in industry trends and best practices and recommend initiatives that drive both near- and long-term strategic priorities. (20%) - Business Intelligence & Analytics:
Serve as executive sponsor for data-driven initiatives that integrate clinical, financial, and patient data to inform strategic decisions. Design and develop analytical frameworks and methodologies to evaluate performance, cost, and quality metrics in order to identify strategic growth opportunities, including those related to payor mix and market dynamics. (10%) - Executive Advisory & Thought Partnership:
Serve as a strategic advisor and thought partner to the CEO. Understand the CEO's vision and strategic direction to provide guidance that supports the organization's mission and goals. Foster strong, trusted relationships with senior leaders to proactively identify challenges, drive alignment, and implement effective solutions. (10%) - Capital Planning Collaboration:
Partner with Chief Operating Officer and other operational leadership to align strategic priorities, metrics and key community stakeholder relationships with Denver Health's capital planning goals, ensuring resources support key initiatives and organizational growth. (10%) - Internal Strategy Planning:
Drive internal strategic planning in coordination with the CEO, Board and Cabinet. Facilitate development of aligned goals, tactics, and implementation plans that cascade across the organization and are coherently represented in Denver Health's strategic scorecard. (10%) - Integrated Delivery System Development:
Partner with senior leaders to drive internal strategy by connecting the organization's strategic agenda to key initiatives across the enterprise, fostering greater coordination, collaboration, and execution across Denver Health. (10%) - Clinical Resource Stewardship:
Partner with executive team and clinical leadership to identify strategic priorities and metrics for resource optimization and value-based care improvements. (10%)
Education:
- Master's Degree Healthcare Administration (MHA), Business Administration (MBA), Public Health (MPH), or a related field relevant to healthcare delivery, management, or policy. (Required) Clinical degrees (e.g., MD, DO, RN) with significant leadership and strategic experience in healthcare and strategy will also be considered.
Work Experience:
- 10+ years Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in healthcare strategy, planning, or operations. (Required)
- Proven track record of leading enterprise-wide strategic planning, execution, and performance management in a healthcare setting.
- Experience navigating and aligning strategy across complex, matrixed organizations (e.g., hospitals, medical groups, health plans, academic medicine).
- Demonstrated success in developing strategic partnerships, joint ventures, mergers/acquisitions, or value-based care models.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Deep understanding of healthcare trends, payment reform, population health, regulatory dynamics, and market forces.
- Strong business and financial acumen, including budgeting, ROI analysis, and risk assessment.
- Exceptional leadership, facilitation, and interpersonal skills to enroll, influence, and collaborate across diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to synthesize complex information into clear, actionable strategies.
- Skilled in data-informed decision-making, with proficiency in strategic analytics, forecasting, and KPI development.
- Experience leading change management and driving innovation across systems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead or collaborate on healthcare facility development, site selection, or strategic real estate partnerships to support enterprise strategy.
- Experience with ambulatory network development.

Salary $308,600.00 - $509,200.00 / yr
