Position Title: Custodian Relief and ProjectCompensation: $18.14 - $18.74Department: Assoc VP Facilities Planning & Mgt_SStart Date: 08/18/2025About this opportunity: Ball State University Facilities Planning and Management has an opportunity for a 3rd shift custodian on the beautiful campus. What you'll do and what you'll bring: Position Function: Under supervision, perform custodial work required for the routine cleaning and maintenance of facilities following proper procedures and techniques for equipment and cleaning products. Duties & Responsibilities: 1. Clean, renovate, and renew, resilient, wood, and hard floor surface finishes, i.e., dust mop, sweep, wet mop, spot mop, scrub, polish and spray buff, strip, seal, wax, etc. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, balance, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds constantly. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, inspect areas, interpret size, shape, and shadow, and distinguish colors. Task requires the use of floor machines, scrubbers, mops, buckets, measuring cups, putty knife, razor blade scraper, cloth or sponge, eye protection, filter mask, chemical products, etc. Task exposes employee to inside environmental conditions, noise, chemicals, vibrations, etc. Task requires mental ability to cope with diversity, which includes adjusting to work assignments and routines as needed, and read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, and receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions. 2. Maintain carpet floor coverings, i.e., vacuum, remove spots and stains, extraction cleaning of carpet and upholstered furniture. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, interpret size, shape, and shadow, and distinguish colors. Task requires the use of carpet vacuum, shampooer, extractor, putty knife, spray bottle, sponge or cloth, measuring cups, eye protection, chemical products, etc. Task exposes employee to inside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, chemicals, etc. Task requires mental ability to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, and receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions. 3. Clean and service restrooms including lavatory, toilet, urinal, stalls, vents, etc. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, stand, climb, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, and exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, interpret size, shape, and shadow, and distinguish colors. Task requires the use of floor machine, vacuum, hand duster, bucket, wringer, mops, brooms, brushes, ladder, cloth, sponge, toilet swab, measuring cups, eye protection, gloves, chemical products, etc. Task exposes employee to inside environmental conditions, noise, chemicals, vibration, etc. Task requires the mental ability to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, and receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions. 4. Dust, vacuum, clean and/or polish furniture, surfaces; clean facilities, fixtures, hardware and windows; change lighting and clean fixtures as required. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, balance, stand, climb, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds constantly. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, interpret size, shape, and shadow, and distinguish colors. Task requires the use of dust mop, vacuum, hand duster, brushes, cloth, dust pan, ladder, scaffolds, screwdriver, spray bottle, bucket, sponge, cloth, measuring cups, eye protection, filter mask, light bulbs, chemical products, etc. Task exposes employee to inside working conditions, noise, chemicals, heights, etc. Task requires mental ability to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, and receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions. 5. Collect and dispose of trash, refuse, recycling materials, and debris into designated receptacles. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, and perceive depth. Task requires the use of carts, trash bags, refuse bins, trash cans, dollies, gloves, etc. Task exposes employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, chemicals, etc. Task requires mental ability to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, and receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions. 6. Sweep debris, and/or sweep or shovel snow from outside entrances, landings, steps, walks; clean exterior surfaces of windows, doors, and other building fixtures. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, reach, stand, walk, lift, push, pull, finger, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds constantly. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, and distinguish colors. Task requires the use of brooms, dust pan, snow shovel, plastic bags, squeegee, window washing pole, rags, towels, ladders, etc. Task exposes employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, chemicals, heights, etc. Task requires the mental ability to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, and receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions. 7. Clean, maintain, restock, and organize storage areas and equipment; report needed repairs of building and equipment to supervisor and/or group leader in written form, etc. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, stand, walk, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds constantly. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, and distinguish colors. Task requires the use of dollies, rags, Building Custodial Reports, chemicals, etc. Task exposes employee to inside environmental conditions, chemicals, etc. Task requires the mental ability to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, and receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions. 8. Acquire and maintain knowledge of job related chemicals, environmental, health, and physical concerns. Requires the physical ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials and judge distances. Employee is exposed to inside environmental conditions. Task requires the mental ability to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, and receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions. 9. Lock and unlock doors in accordance with departmental policies and procedures; maintain security of assigned keys, pagers, and radios. Requires the physical ability to stoop, reach, stand, walk, finger, and exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and 10 pounds of force frequently. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials and judge distance. Set rooms according to custodial work sheet and customer specifications; arrange, move, and/or replace furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment from room to room as requires; report items requiring repair to supervisor and/or group leaders; perform minor repairs to furniture and building fixtures. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, stand, walk, lift, push, pull, finger, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to judge distances and interpret size, shape, and shadow. Task requires the use of screwdrivers, pliers, hammer, ladder, cart, etc. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, heights, etc. Task requires mental ability to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, and receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions. 11. Guide and assist in training student custodial employees. Requires all the above listed physical activities, physical and mental essential functions, use of machines, tools, equipment, visual requirements, and environmental conditions, etc. Task requires mental ability to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, and receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions. 12. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: 1. High School diploma or equivalent (GED). 2. If required by assignment, must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in custodial service.
