Job Description
ECU Department of Water Resources Center is currently seeking a Public Science Facilitator.

Applications are now being accepted for a Public Science Facilitator who will lead the 2025-2026 Community Water Corps program. The positions are open to ECU students older than 18 years old who want to make a difference in communities throughout eastern NC. No specialized science background is needed (on the job training will be provided) and students of any major are welcome, though some experience with water chemistry, ecology, GIS, environmental justice, community organizing, or environmental issues is helpful. Review of applications will begin on September 2nd and will continue until the position is filled.
Public Science Facilitators work with university personnel, community organizations, and individuals from throughout eastern North Carolina to develop and lead science activities with the general public. You will facilitate the Community Water Network program to engage the public in environmental issues through measurements, educational programs, and planning for community events that engage people of all ages and backgrounds. Working with project personnel, facilitators will also conduct training sessions, assist with other CWC programs, and support environmental research activities.
As a Public Science Facilitator of the Community Water Network program, you will:

  • Gain valuable experience working with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists that will help you develop your STEM skills, academic skills, leadership and communication skills.
  • Facilitate training and mentorship of community members who join the Community Water Network
  • Coordinate activities with Community Liaisons and fellow Facilitators to create programming that will be of interest to community members and recruit participants for that programming.
  • Manage environmental sampling "toolkits" and data for the program, develop data products (e.g., maps/infographics), and coordinate with other staff to conduct analyses or other research activities.
  • Plan and host community meetings, trainings, or other community engagement events and coordinate with faculty to implement data collection strategies at those events.
  • Coordinate with communications staff, community organizations, and community partners throughout the watershed to advertise the Network and relevant training sessions.
  • Undergo all appropriate training to work with youth and follow best practices for youth safety.
  • Assist with other CWC programs where necessary.
  • Report to program leaders, community partners, and other project participants.

  • Willing to learn how to translate technical ideas into language accessible to broad audiences

Ability to come to ECU's campus regularly during regular work hours and flexibility to work evenings/weekends for events

Requirements:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Over 18 years old
  • Open to ECU students with at least two more semesters before graduation
