Job Summary

Certified Central Sterile Technician will perform his/her duties within the Instrument Room areas that would include the decontamination, preparation and sterile processing of surgical instruments and supplies for patient use in
accordance with Hospital and Departmental policies and procedures.

Essential Functions
  • A. Maintains compliance with the policies and procedures set fourth in the following:
    a. Administrative Procedure Manual
    b. Personnel Manual
    c. Fire and Disaster Manual
    d. Infection Control Manual
    e. OR Manual
    B. Works with the Instrument Room Manager and Assistant Manager to implement changes in new policies and procedures.
    C. Is able to understand and articulate changes and revisions in hospital/departmental policies.
    D. Adheres to policies with legal/regulatory requirements, including but not necessarily limited to :
    a. Risk Management
    b. Patient Bill of Rights
    c. Environment of Care Rounds
  • Performs work in a safe and effective manner in order to assure optimum functioning of the Department
  • Participates in Staff Development and Educational Activities
  • A. Performs daily assignments as assigned by the Instrument Room Manager.
    B. Prepares critical instruments sets and specialty equipment for sterilization.
    C. Assist in maintaining appropriate par levels of supplies
    D. Communicates issues to the Instrument Room Manager/ANM's to enhance/facilitate operations.
    E. Decontaminates, cleans, prepares, assembles, wraps, sterilizes, stores and distributes instruments completed by the department.
    F. Monitors the Instrument Tracking System, Biological Monitoring and Internal indicators.
    G. Responsible for the picking of surgical sets/peel-pouched items; and any other surgical instruments needed for all scheduled and emergent cases identified on "OR PREFERENCE CARD SLIP" or by the OR Charge Nurse.
    H. Inspects and checks work in progress to ensures that standards are adhered to and takes corrective action as necessary.
    I. Works closely with other departments and related personnel in coordinating activities and resolving problems encountered concerning supply shortages, needs and instruments problems.
    J. Maintains inventory list and picture files of all loaner instrumentation, accessories and implants.

Qualifications
  • GED Required
  • Knowledge of Sterilization guidelines and standards for instrument sets and supplies.
  • Knowledge of Decontamination Techniques and Infection Control Standards.
  • Knowledge of Biological Monitoring and measuring the efficacy of steam, chemical, Steris and (Sterrad) Hydrogen Plasma Sterilization.
  • Knowledge of Surgical Specialty Instruments, Power Equipment and
    Retractor Systems
  • OHS Fit Test Required
  • OHS Annual Assessment Required
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician Preferred
