Purpose

The Patient Financial Navigator plays a vital dual role within UT Health Austin, supporting both the operational and mission-driven aspects of patient access. This position is responsible for guiding uninsured and underserved patients through financial screening processes to determine eligibility for UTHA's charity care program or public funding sources such as Medicaid, CHIP, County Indigent programs, or federal Marketplace plans. In parallel, the role supports insured patients by managing insurance verification, authorizations, and out-of-pocket financial planning. Compassionate communication, attention to detail, and cross-team coordination are key to success.

Responsibilities

Equitable Financial Access & Program Enrollment

  • Serve as a frontline advocate for uninsured and underserved patients seeking care at UTHA.
  • Conduct financial screenings to assess eligibility for UTHA's charity policy or applicable public coverage programs.
  • Educate and assist patients in applying for financial assistance, including Medicaid, CHIP, County Indigent Care, or Marketplace plans.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of enrollment applications, including document collection and submission support.
  • Maintain current knowledge of public program eligibility criteria and policy changes.
  • Provide clear, compassionate communication about financial options and next steps.

Insurance Verification & Financial Counseling

  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits for incoming and returning patients.
  • Obtain prior authorizations for services as required by payers.
  • Communicate cost estimates, copays, and out-of-pocket responsibilities in a patient-friendly manner.
  • Assist with payment plans and refer patients to appropriate billing or assistance resources.
  • Collaborate with coding and billing teams to resolve payer issues, identify recurring barriers, and escalate as needed.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all financial counseling interactions.
  • Log all communications and actions in the EHR and other required platforms.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and organizational policies related to financial assistance and patient financial communications.

Team Coordination & Process Improvement

  • Serve as a liaison between patients, financial services, clinical teams, and external program contacts.
  • Identify trends in coverage issues or program access and recommend process improvements.
  • Actively participate in efforts to streamline workflows, reduce patient friction, and increase access to care.
  • Track follow-up on pending enrollments or authorization cases to ensure timely resolution.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or a related field and 3 years of experience in patient financial services, insurance verification, or financial counseling within a healthcare setting OR High School Diploma/GED and 7 years of experience in patient financial services, insurance verification, or financial counseling within a healthcare setting
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in healthcare administration or a related field.
  • 5 years of experience in patient financial services, with experience in a supervisory role.
  • Certification in healthcare access management (e.g., CHAM) or Certified Patient Navigator (CPN).
Salary Range

$45,000 + depending on qualifications
