The Chemistry Department is one of the largest and most complex departments in the College of Arts and Sciences.

There are 50 faculty members, 44 SHRA and 37 EHRA staff positions, 260 graduate students, 37 postdoctoral research associates, 700 undergraduate majors, and an annual total of approximately 10,000 registrations by all students in classroom and laboratory courses. The Department is housed in five buildings with over 580,000 sq. feet of space. The faculty participate in teaching assignments which involve an average of 200 students per faculty member per semester. The majority of faculty are research active and supervise graduate students working on their Masters or Ph.D. degrees, undergraduate students carrying out independent research and honors programs, research technicians and postdoctoral research associates. Primarily the research is funded by federal and private agencies such as NSF, NIH, Army, Navy, DOE, PRF and involves expenditures of more than nineteen million dollars annually. A total of over thirty-two million dollars from all sources is expended annually in the Department.

The Temporary Research Technician in the NMR Core Laboratory in the NMR Core laboratory at UNC Department of Chemistry plays a key role in developing applications for Benchtop NMR in the NMR Lab. This individual will collaborate with faculty, post-docs and students in the application of benchtop NMR for reaction monitoring. If time permits, the individual will participate in instrument maintenance and working with users.

An emphasis is on the development of standard and advanced operating procedures on a benchtop NMR configured for flow applications that we have on loan. Since the duration of the loan is limited (6-8 weeks), work is heavily focused on developing protocols for running 2-3 types of reactions coupled with other in-line techniques. These include at least a 450nm light source, UV/Vis, mass spectrometry and possibly electrolysis and infrared spectroscopy.

Time permitting, the individual may be asked to assist the laboratory team to maintain high field NMR spectrometers, experiments at high field and assisting users with advanced techniques. This can also include coordinating with core staff to support high throughput runs using the sample changers on NMR spectrometers, general maintenance of associated magnets, diagnosing instrument issues and assisting and training users in NMR spectroscopy.
