The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. Position Summary
This position supports clinical and laboratory research activities by performing laboratory assays and laboratory procedures that contribute to ongoing research projects in the Department of Large Animal Medicine within the College of Veterinary Medicine. The incumbent will work primarily in the laboratory setting, assisting with sample processing, data generation and curation, and maintenance of a well-organized and compliant lab environment. Responsibilities include running established assays (e.g., ELISA, qPCR, cell culture), assisting with troubleshooting and optimization of protocols, and supporting data organization for scholarly manuscripts and grant proposals across multiple research teams within the department, and contributing to the training of new lab personnel.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Experience working in a laboratory research setting in the life sciences.
  • Familiarity with common lab techniques such as ELISA, qPCR, Western blotting, or cell culture.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with laboratory staff, faculty, and students.
  • Ability to follow protocols and maintain accurate records.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Organize, design, and conduct laboratory and field research projects to support departmental faculty and graduate student research efforts
  • Perform laboratory techniques, including ELISA, nucleic acid isolation, quantitative PCR, cell culture, and other relevant molecular and cellular assays.
  • Follow established protocols for sample processing, data collection, and quality control.
  • Curate, analyze, and interpret data collected and assist with project report preparation and data presentation to the laboratory team, to stakeholders, and at conferences
  • Assist in the development and optimization of new assays as directed.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of laboratory procedures and data in accordance with lab and university standards.
  • Collaborate in organizing and maintaining laboratory inventory, reagents, and supplies.
  • Participate in regular lab meetings and contribute to troubleshooting and problem-solving efforts.
  • Maintain field and laboratory research protocols and adhere to all laboratory and institutional safety protocols and training requirements.

  • Maintain departmental laboratory space and equipment.
  • Coordinate, organize, and develop and implemental departmental systems for sample labeling, storage, and tracking.
  • Assist with maintaining compliance with university and federal lab safety guidelines.
  • Prepare lab reports, protocols, and figures for presentations or publications.
  • Assist graduate students and other lab personnel as needed with performing and learning technical tasks.
  • Onboard and train new lab personnel, including students, staff, and graduate assistants, to ensure proper technique, adherence to protocols, and lab safety.
  • May supervise other laboratory staff and student workers.
  • Report to the Assistant Department Head for Research
