Salary Range: **$100,000 to $200,000 per year

** Starting salary is based on minimum education and years of experience and increases based on education and/or experience.

Responsibilities

As a Cognitive Systems Engineer Level 5, you'll:

    Design and integrate intelligent systems that enhance human decision-making in complex domains.
  • Identify and resolve brittleness in workflows and human-machine systems to prevent mission failure.
  • Apply principled CSE techniques like knowledge elicitation, functional abstraction, and brittleness assessments.
  • Collaborate with users, engineers, and stakeholders to develop decision-centered solutions.
  • Lead or support the development of prototypes and oversee their evolution into operational systems.
  • Advance the field of cognitive systems engineering through innovation, documentation, and strategic impact.

Level 5 & 6 Engineers will also:

  • Lead engineering teams and mentor junior staff.
  • Drive the strategic direction of CSE efforts across projects.
  • Design intuitive interfaces grounded in cognitive science principles.


Qualifications

Cognitive Systems Engineer Level 4:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering field AND a minimum of eight (8) years of applied cognitive systems engineering techniques and brittleness assessment experience, OR
  • Master's degree in an engineering field AND a minimum of six (6) years of applied cognitive systems engineering techniques and brittleness assessment experience, OR
  • PhD in an engineering field AND a minimum of four (4) years of applied cognitive systems engineering techniques and brittleness assessment experience, OR
  • Plus two (2) years of rapid prototyping, iterative design, decision centered systems design, human performance measurement, and system evaluation experience.

Cognitive Systems Engineer Level 5:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering field AND a minimum of twelve (12) years of applied cognitive systems engineering techniques and brittleness assessment experience, OR
  • Master's degree in an engineering field AND a minimum of ten (10) years of applied cognitive systems engineering techniques and brittleness assessment experience, OR
  • PhD in an engineering field AND a minimum of six (6) years of applied cognitive systems engineering techniques and brittleness assessment experience, OR
  • Plus five (5) to six (6) years of rapid prototyping, iterative design, decision centered systems design, human performance measurement, and system evaluation experience.

Cognitive Systems Engineer Level 6:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering field AND a minimum of fifteen (15) years of applied cognitive systems engineering techniques and brittleness assessment experience, OR
  • Master's degree in an engineering field AND a minimum of ten (10) years of applied cognitive systems engineering techniques and brittleness assessment experience, OR
  • PhD in an engineering field AND a minimum of eight (8) years of applied cognitive systems engineering techniques and brittleness assessment experience, OR
  • Plus six (6) to ten (10) years of rapid prototyping, iterative design, decision centered systems design, human performance measurement, and system evaluation experience.
