Senior Technician

Analytical Mechanics Associates (AMA) is currently accepting applications for a Senior Technician position in Hampton, VA to support ongoing activities at the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC).

Specific job description:

Join the dynamic team at the NASA Langley Materials Analysis and Quality Assurance Laboratory (MAQAL) and contribute expertise to the Research, Science and Engineering Services (RSES) contract. This role involves supporting diverse advanced space materials projects through collaboration with NASA researchers, external academics, and industry partners. The position requires working with a variety of materials and operating specialized equipment, mandating strict adherence to all laboratory/state/federal safety protocols. Candidate should possess the ability to interpret and follow detailed instructions and standard operating procedures, leveraging their knowledge of mechanical/electrical/material principles. Following initial training, the successful candidate will work independently, exercising good judgment and adhering to quality standards in all interactions and tasks.

The key responsibilities include both destructive and non-destructive testing, covering mechanical and chemical property assessment, detailed microscopic examination and electrical/electronic component evaluation. Specific techniques employed encompass tensile and hardness tests, X-ray fluorescence, micro-photography, metallographic analysis, fluorescent penetrant inspection, visual/dimensional assessments, voltage/resistance measurements, and assembly inspections. Beyond direct testing, the role involves operating specialized laboratory equipment, meticulously executing sampling procedures, performing equipment calibration and verification based on established procedures, determining whether materials meet acceptance/rejection criteria. The position further requires the verification and certification of all safety-critical stock/non-stock items. Administrative duties include the monthly documentation of laboratory activities and maintaining a comprehensive database of records. Finally, the role extends to supporting geometric measurement activities outside the MAQAL facility and observing environmental testing of space flight hardware, utilizing variety of instruments not limited to height gauges, dial calipers, pin gauges, gauge blocks and micrometers. This position demands a high degree of workmanship, meticulous attention to detail, and precise reporting and documentation.

Education and Qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.An associate degree or higher in a relevant technical field (electrical, mechanical, or materials technology) is a plus.
  • Minimum 7 years in mechanical/electrical/materials testing and analysis.
  • Must be PC-literate and familiar with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Proper knowledge ofsafety measures and equipment upkeep is required.
  • Demonstrates the ability to safely handle and dispose of hazardous materials, as well as identify and mitigate electrical hazards.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to dynamic work requirements and learn new disciplines and skills.
  • US citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency is required due to customer site restrictions.
