Position Summary

The Birch Lab in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a talented and enthusiastic candidate for the full-time position of Senior Research Specialist to participate in impactful, biomedical research activities. The Senior Research Specialist will assist with collaborative, laboratory activities in the area of cancer epigenetics and gene transcription using techniques of cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, preclinical mouse modeling as well as actively participate in the day-to-day management of the lab. The successful candidate will be well-organized, passionate, and proficient in basic lab techniques while eagerly gaining independence to perform new skills and responsibilities as assigned.

This position is a principle contributor in developing specific research project requirements and is responsible for all aspects of the project from development through delivery. Perform complex laboratory and data collection techniques. May coordinate and direct the work and research tasks of lower level research staff.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop objectives and design of research and data collection procedures. Conceptualize, initiate and execute research goals for project.
  • Conduct and coordinate advanced research experiments. Analyze and interpret data and results and refine experimental design.
  • Develop and write advanced experimental protocols.
  • Evaluate current developments and research findings to determine their potential applicability to research projects.
  • Replicate, refine and add/develop new research approaches based on project needs. Advise on new direction for research based on experimental results.
  • Monitor project developments on an ongoing basis and implement changes as needed.
  • Prepare, organize and communicate research results. Write papers, grants, and other documents for publication based on research findings.
  • Author and co-author articles for publication and present at scientific symposia and conferences.
  • May act as supervisor or team lead in directing and coordinating the work of lower level staff. Guide, train and advise lower level researchers and students on techniques, methods and procedures.
  • Plan, assign and review work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met. Hire, train, develop and manage staff to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.
  • Supports collaborative research projects by designing and independently executing experiments using techniques of molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry (i.e. molecular cloning/gene editing, PCR, sequencing, protein expression and purification including Western Blot, cell culture, and microscopy)
  • Assists with preclinical mouse modeling including mouse husbandry as well as handling and processing of biospecimens
  • Maintains clear, accurate, complete, and timely reports of experiments and generated data
  • Troubleshoot and solve problems independently with limited direction
  • Assists with day-to-day management of the lab including lab organization; maintaining stock and inventory; and ordering and shipping supplies in accordance with safe laboratory standards
  • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in science or related field required. Master's degree in science preferred.
    • A minimum of 5 years related research experience.
    • Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices and methods.
    • Proficient in specific lab research techniques.


    Preferred Qualifications
    Strong experience in the following techniques of cell biology, molecular biology, and/or biochemistry is preferred: DNA, RNA, and protein extraction, Western blotting, protein immunoprecipitation, PCR, RT-PCR, cloning or gene editing, DNA transformation, and mammalian cell culture.
    Prior experience with mouse work (i.e. husbandry and/or preclinical modeling), CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, chromatin immunoprecipitation, ChIP-Seq, RNA-Seq, and bioinformatics is advantageous. Ability to effectively train others is also considered a plus.
    Possesses and applies advanced knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices and methods in accordance with professional ethical and safety standards.
    Proficient in specific lab research techniques of cellular and molecular biology, and biochemistry.
    Well-organized with attention for detail.
    Willingness to develop new skills.
    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    Ability to work independently and as part of collaborative team.
    Proficiency with Office suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
