Location: Dallas-Fort Worth, TX
Schedule: M-F, 60-70 hours/week, opportunity for overtime

Pay:

Visterra offers competitive pay commensurate with experience in a similar position. The pay rate range for this position is $22 to $30/hr, but actual compensation will vary depending upon new hire experience and qualifications as well as internal equity.

Role Overview:

The Fleet Mechanic must inspect, diagnose, adjust, repair, and perform routine maintenance on trucks, trailers, and other equipment. Inspect and monitor transportation equipment, vehicles or systems to ensure compliance with regulations and safety standards. This role specializes in maintaining and repairing small engines (mowers, trimmers, blowers, and other landscaping equipment) in addition to fleet vehicles and trailers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair small engines (mowers, blowers, trimmers, chainsaws, sprayers, etc.).
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on landscaping equipment, ensuring reliability during peak seasonal operations.
  • Maintain both on-road fleet vehicles and off-road landscaping machinery, prioritizing equipment critical to field operations.
  • Provide emergency troubleshooting and repairs for small equipment at job sites.
  • Perform diagnostics and troubleshooting on vehicles and equipment using handheld computers, gauges, test instruments, and visual/auditory inspections.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance including oil changes, battery checks, lubrication, and routine inspections to identify wear, damage, or abuse.
  • Utilize a variety of tools-both hand and power-to conduct repairs, including pneumatic wrenches, welding equipment, hoists, and precision instruments.
  • Raise and maneuver heavy machinery using hydraulic jacks or hoists to access and repair internal components.
  • Repair and replace mechanical systems such as brakes, headlights, mirrors, heaters, and other vehicle accessories.
  • Inspect and adjust safety mechanisms including protective guards, loose bolts, and compliance-related equipment to meet regulatory standards.
  • Test drive and assess performance of vehicles and equipment post-repair using diagnostic tools to ensure operational integrity.
  • Perform field service calls to troubleshoot and repair broken equipment on-site when shop service is not feasible.
  • Inspect completed repairs to confirm proper workmanship and adherence to operational and safety standards.
  • Complete required documentation including daily maintenance logs and reports to support fleet tracking and compliance.

Standard operating procedures, safety work rules and good general manufacturing practices are followed on a daily basis.
  • Adaptability - Can pivot quickly between small engine and fleet equipment needs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Independence - Comfortable troubleshooting and repairing equipment in the field with minimal supervision.

Requirements:

  • Experience - 1-2 years of experience working with small engines or related mechanic roles required (mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, etc.); 3+ years preferred.
  • Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers. Ability to effectively present information to management. Ability to interact clearly and effectively, in both written and oral communication, with supervisor, clients and staff.
  • Mathematical Skills - Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Drivers License - Valid driver's license is required; Must be able to travel and have a clean driving record.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this Job, the individual is to remain in a stationary position for 50 percent of the time. The individual needs to frequently move about inside the shop to access tools, equipment, parts, and other necessary items to complete the work order. The individual frequently positions self to repair motor vehicle equipment, including underneath and above the object being repaired. They are frequently using hand tools to complete the work order. They must be able to exchange accurate information with other employees and customers throughout the service process. Must be able to detect mechanical issues from short distances to determine what action needs to be taken. The employee must regularly push, pull, and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the individual is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. They are frequently exposed to vibration. The individual performing this job is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. They are also exposed to dust, dirt and grease conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
