Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver-The World's Most Experienced Driver-to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo's fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for talented teammates who'll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.

In this hybrid role, you will report to a Systems Test Engineering Manager.

You will:

  • Lead Verification & Validation: Own the V&V strategy for new and existing autonomous vehicle platforms, specifically for our Commercialization and Depot Efficiency areas.

  • Drive Test Campaigns: Plan and schedule V&V campaigns by translating requirements into action.

  • Supervise & Coordinate: Oversee and coordinate all verification activities, from reviewing requirements and designing tests to ensuring their execution.

  • Align with Stakeholders: Collaborate with other teams to ensure efficient and effective test planning across the company.

  • Provide Technical Support: Support Test Engineers and Test Conductors by providing technical guidance during test execution.

  • Manage Test Requests: Serve as the primary point of contact for test requests from Systems Engineers or Developers to validate new features and prevent regressions.

  • Automate Testing: Develop and implement a test automation strategy that leverages Waymo's full suite of test environments, from software-in-the-loop simulation to full vehicle hardware-in-the-loop (HIL).

  • Mentor and Develop: Provide technical training to grow the team's skills in areas like test equipment, analysis tools, and scripting languages.

  • Qualify Software Releases: Lead the qualification process for new Waymo Driver software releases.

You have:

  • Project Management: Proven ability to manage complex projects by understanding scope, resources, and timelines to create detailed schedules. You can skillfully navigate and communicate program conflicts and trade-offs.

  • Collaboration: Exceptional communication, coordination, and collaboration skills. You can support the execution of multiple parallel test activities.

  • Test Design: Experience in test planning and experimental design, with a focus on creating tests for safety and repeatability.

We prefer:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant engineering field (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, Robotics, Controls, Aerospace) or equivalent practical experience.

  • Experience with SQL or other database analysis tools.

  • Knowledge of autonomous vehicles, infrastructure, and operations.

  • Understanding of systems engineering principles, including requirements definition and formal verification and validation methods.

  • Experience with data analysis and test scripting/automation using languages like C/C++, Python, or Matlab/Simulink.
