The Crystal Spring Tower, which opened in July 2025, is the new home of the Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) as well as an expanded emergency department. The CVI includes a nationally accredited Chest Pain Center, a Cath Lab which performs over 700 PCIs annually, a Ventricular Assist Device Program, and is considered an Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Center of Excellence. The priority of the job share is to fulfill Monday-Friday coverage of the cardiac ICU (CCU) service, which also includes patients on the progressive care telemetry unit as they transition from CCU. The job share Clinical Specialist will develop and maintain a clinical practice by participating in bedside rounds and responding to medical emergencies. To meet part-time work hour allocation, any overlapping availability of job share pharmacists will be scheduled as coverage support for adult ICU teams or decentralized zones as needed. All non-direct patient care activities will be shared amongst the job share pharmacists. Responsibilities include collaborating with members of CVI to develop policies and protocols that provide effective and efficient use of medications, providing consultation for other health care providers, educating patients and other health care providers, and reviewing and processing medication orders. This position would also involve relevant committee representation, staff education, and precepting pharmacy students. The specialist is directly involved in precepting PGY1 pharmacy residents and PGY2 pharmacy residents in critical care and internal medicine. These residency duties include but are not limited to precepting direct patient care rotations, clinical research, medication use evaluations, presentations, and process improvement projects. Qualified candidates must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and must possess a current Virginia pharmacist license or be eligible for licensure. An ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is required and specialized PGY2 residency training in Cardiology or Critical Care is preferred.
