MTSI is seeking a Systems Administrator to provide day-to-day technical support and system administration for a dynamic, mission-critical environment supporting the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson AFB. This role will assist in the technical management, maintenance, and security of enterprise IT infrastructure with a focus on virtualization, automation, and a mix of Windows and Linux systems. This position requires experience with Linux, Nutanix or VMware platforms, and Windows Server administration. This role requires understanding of DoD-specific IT environments, including the RMF process, cybersecurity standards, and managing classified IT projects. This role will support dozens of small research groups, with highly specific needs. Experience with Everfox cross-domain solutions (CDS), Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC), TTC/TTCR, High Speed Guards, and Trusted Gateway Systems is highly desirable. Additionally, experience with deploying and managing enterprise data catalogs such as Informatica, Alation, Apache Atlas, or others, is also highly desirable.
This position is on-site at WPAFB. The ideal candidate is resourceful, highly organized, capable of working independently while thriving in a dynamic, team-oriented environment with ever-evolving priorities.
You'll play a critical role in system upkeep, user support, patching, documentation, and incident response. This is a hands-on technical role ideal for a self-motivated individual with a strong foundational knowledge of Linux and Windows operating systems, virtualization, automation, and cybersecurity in classified environments.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Support day-to-day operations of Linux (RHEL/CentOS) and Windows Server/Desktop systems.
  • Assist with troubleshooting OS, application, and connectivity issues across multiple systems and networks.
  • Perform routine system administration tasks including patching, updates, account management, and basic scripting.
  • Support virtualization environments (Nutanix AHV or VMware ESXi) under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Help maintain system and network monitoring tools (e.g., Elastic, SolarWinds), logging systems, and backup solutions (e.g., Veeam).
  • Assist with endpoint management and configuration using automation tools like Ansible, Satellite, and BigFix.
  • Collaborate with the helpdesk and users to resolve tickets and escalate issues as needed.
  • Document standard operating procedures, configuration changes, and system logs.
  • Participate in configuration, deployment, and maintenance of infrastructure in secure environments.
  • Support system hardening efforts and compliance activities in accordance with RMF, STIGs, and other DoD cybersecurity standards.
  • Work with the Senior Systems Administrator to onboard new users and research teams to centralized infrastructure and services.
  • Contribute to system upgrades, security audits, and overall IT support operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience supporting both Linux and Windows systems in an enterprise or DoD setting.
  • Working knowledge of basic virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware or Nutanix).
  • Familiarity with networking concepts: IP addressing, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and firewalls.
  • Active DoD Secret clearance (TS/SCI eligibility is preferred).
  • Must meet DoD IAT Level II certification requirements (Security+ CE or equivalent).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to support users in a professional, structured environment.
  • Ability to follow detailed technical procedures and document changes accurately.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and time-management skills.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with Red Hat systems, particularly RHEL 7/8, Satellite, and IDM.
  • Exposure to enterprise tools like BigFix, Ansible, SolarWinds, Elastic Stack, or Veeam.
  • Some experience with scripting (PowerShell, Bash) or configuration automation.
  • Previous work in classified environments and knowledge of RMF, STIGs, and cybersecurity policies.
  • Exposure or experience with deployment and maintenance of enterprise data catalogs such as Informatica, Alation, Apache Atlas or others.
  • Experience in supporting enterprise user onboarding, desktop imaging, and remote support.
  • Familiarity with Dell PowerScale (Isilon) or similar enterprise storage systems is a plus.
  • IT certifications such as RHCSA, MCSA, Linux+, CCNA, or Nutanix/VMware foundational certs are beneficial.
  • Bachelor's degree in IT, Cybersecurity, or related discipline.
