Senior Architect - Austin, TX (Hybrid)

As a Senior Architect, you will lead the design and evolution of Western Union's API platform, driving simplification, scalability, and innovation across business lines. You'll collaborate with engineering, product, and business stakeholders to define architectural standards, guide implementation, and ensure alignment with strategic goals.

Role Responsibilities



  • Define and lead theAPI platform architecture, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards and business objectives.
  • Define and implement API governance, versioning strategies, and lifecycle management.
  • Championmicroservices architecture, event-driven design, and cloud-native principles across engineering teams.
  • Establish and enforcearchitecture governance, including design patterns, integration standards, and security protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with security, privacy, and regulatory standards (e.g., OAuth2, GDPR, etc.).
  • Providetechnical leadershipthrough design reviews, code reviews, and mentoring of development teams.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into scalable, resilient technical solutions.
  • Driveplatform modernization initiatives, including migration to cloud platforms (AWS/GCP), adoption of streaming technologies, and performance optimization.
  • Ensure architectural decisions supporthigh availability, fault tolerance, and observability.
  • Lead efforts incontinuous improvement, technical innovation, and strategic technology planning.


Role Requirements



  • BS/MS in Computer Science or related field with10+ years of experiencein software architecture and engineering, with 4+ years in architecture roles.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards for Architecture framework like TOGAF, Design Principles like SOLID and Design Patterns like GoF.
  • Proven experience in:

    • Java/J2EE,Spring Boot, RESTful APIs
    • Microservices architectureandevent-driven systems(Kafka, Kinesis)
    • Cloud platforms(AWS, GCP)
    • PostgreSQLandNoSQL databases(Couchbase, Cassandra)
    • Caching Framework


  • Strong understanding ofdesign patterns (GOF),scalable system design, andintegration best practices.
  • Experience with DevOps tools (Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins/GitLab CI, Terraform, etc.).
  • Experience withCI/CD,Agile methodologies, andTest-Driven Development (TDD).
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across technical and non-technical audiences.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience with API gateways (e.g., Kong, Apigee, AWS API Gateway).
  • Familiarity with GraphQL, gRPC, or WebSockets.
  • Exposure to NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).
  • Experience with SRE practices and chaos engineering.

Salary

The base salary range is $160,000 - $175,000 USD per year, total on target compensation includes a base salary plus long-term and short-term incentives that align with individual and company performance. Actual salaries will vary based on candidate's qualifications, skills and competencies.
