About the Role:
We have an exciting opportunity to support our Legal team as a Lead Counsel based in Shelton, CT. The Lead Counsel manages all aspects of litigation/arbitration, transactional and other franchising and leasing matters within the assigned region in North America. Legal Advisor to stakeholders of Subway business teams for all franchising and leasing matters within the region. Provides stakeholders solution focused counsel, risk assessment and strategy in a communicative and coordinated manner. Supervises Franchising Paralegal and oversees legal operations within the region.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Manages all aspects of litigation, arbitration, arbitration award enforcement & settlements for all franchising and leasing matters in the region. Includes matters related to franchisee FA compliance, franchisee bankruptcy, leasing, franchisee initiated litigation, franchisee trusts/estates, governmental investigations, ADA, employment, vendor litigation, Business Developer litigation. Engages and oversees outside counsel assisting in matters not handled soley by Lead Counsel.
- Manages legal support for all transactional matters within the region related to Business Developers, multi-unit owners, large non-traditional entity franchisees, franchisee test programs, amendments to existing FAs, etc. Drafts and negotiates the associated contracts and transactions. Obtains review and advice from outside counsel as needed.
- Legal advisor to stakeholders of Subway business teams providing risk assessment and counsel on threatened/pending litigation, transactional matters and special projects assigned to Lead Counsel. Provides solutions and strategies to address these matters in alignment with business objectives. Communicates and coordinates with internal and external teams to ensure stakeholders are well-informed.
- Supervision of Paralegal assisting with legal support of all franchising matters.
- Oversees the operational aspects of all matters within the region. Determines use of counsel, reviews and approves invoices, ensures all matters are properly addressed in Tracker, considers strategies for various types of litigation and transactional matters, and collaborates with other NA Leads to ensure team alignment.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate required.
- At least 5 years overall experience required with 1 year's management experience.
- Admitted to practice law in the State of CT or the ability to waive in.
- Strong and effective advocacy and negotiation skills with a focus on litigation, arbitration and transactional matters.
- Strong contract drafting capability with high attention to detail.
- Effective analytical and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently managing a large case load covering a variety of practice areas.
- Ability to provide effective sound legal advice to stakeholders in a prompt manner that balances legal and business objectives.
- Experience in Franchise Law and/or Real Estate a plus.
