Open Date Sep 16, 2025 Description The Integrated Innovation Institute (III) at Carnegie Mellon University seeks an adjunct professor for the fall 2025 term for the Visual Communications for Innovators course. This position would teach students within the Master of Integrated Innovation for Products & Services (MIIPS) degree. The MIIPS degree is a residential program based in Pittsburgh and final candidates will teach on campus this fall term. This position can accommodate teaching in the evening to work with an instructor's full-time daytime job schedule. This course will be offered in Mini 2 for 7 weeks from mid-October to mid-December this fall term. Qualified candidates will have previous teaching and work experience related to visual communication design. Candidates should be able to convey course content using a variety of methods and tools including (but not limited to) readings, hands-on exercises, assignments, examples, group discussions, lectures, whiteboard demonstrations, etc. Below is the standard course description for Visual Communications for Innovators: This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of visual communication theory, help them make intentional design choices in various mediums, and develop hands-on skills through practice. Students will learn the basics of typography, color theory, layout, composition, and data visualization, and practice expressing their ideas by sketching, whiteboarding, and using modern digital design tools. Students will also learn to question the design choices as well as seek and provide effective feedback through design critiques. Other topics may include storyboarding, fundamentals of user interface design, design systems, and physical product prototyping. Students will create a variety of artifacts: concept posters, communication flyers, digital advertisement banners, data visualizations, brand identities, video storyboards, etc. This course is a requirement for MIIPS and MIIPS Advanced Study students in their first semester at the Integrated Innovation Institute. This course is offered as an elective course in the MIIPS curriculum, which cross-trains students across engineering, design and business disciplines to become elite innovators. The Master of Integrated Innovation for Products & Services is a professional degree that trains the next generation of innovators, design thinkers, disruptors, and world changers.
