POSITION SPECIFICS The Penn State University Police and Public Safety Department is seeking an individual interested and committed to serving the community of students, faculty, and staff as a Patrol Sergeant stationed at the University Park campus. The Sergeant is responsible for carrying out the functions of protection of life and property, preservation of peace and good order of the community, enhancement of positive community engagement initiatives, enforcement of laws and University policies/procedures, public safety, investigative work, and other related duties. The successful candidate will be responsible for the prevention of illegal, unsafe, or undesirable activity and regulatory violations through patrol, education, inspection, and the deterrent effect of enforcement. Sergeantswill also be expected to enforce Federal, State, and local laws, as well as University regulations, through investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of violators. Successful candidates will possess: Skills necessary to enhance public respect for law enforcement and the University with courteous, devoted, and ethical service Capacity to work cooperatively with various levels of faculty, staff, students, and outside agencies Ability to provide effective, honest, and credible testimony at court hearings Outstanding customer service orientation; excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent analytical, judgment, ethical decision-making, and organizational skills Ability to work in an inclusive and respectful environment Capability to uphold an excellent standard of conduct at all times, abiding by laws, regulations and policies The selected individual will report to a Lieutenant and willcoordinate theworkof both sworn and non-sworn staffand oversee the daily operations of the police force at the campus. Responsibilitieswillinclude: Day to day supervision of assigned squad of police officers Completion of performance evaluations Review of officer's written reports, investigations, and case management Training recommendations for officers Participation in departmental disciplinary process and documentation Authorizing vacation and other leave requests via POSS and Workday Interpreting and communicating laws and policies, assuring staff comply with established laws and policies Representing the department on appropriate committees and assisting with the interpretation of laws and criminal procedure Performing all Police Officer duties, as needed This position requires: Successful Background Investigation Successful BPAD scenario-based evaluation U.S. Citizenship Fingerprint background check MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS Bachelor's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: Pennsylvania Driver's License - Pennsylvania Department of Transportation First Aid Certification - American Red Cross, American Heart Association or other accredited organization Firearms Qualification - Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission CLEAN Certification - Pennsylvania State Police Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification - American Red Cross, American Heart Association or other accredited organization Act 120 - MPOETC Certification - Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission A current Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) Act 120 Certification is required for employment. The following requirements can be obtained after hire: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification - American Red Cross, American Heart Association or other accredited organization Firearms Qualification - Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission First Aid Certification - American Red Cross, American Heart Association or other accredited organization BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. Due to the financial and fiduciary responsibilities of this position, successful completion of a credit history check will be required in addition to standard background checks. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. SALARY & BENEFITS The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $68,200.00 - $102,300.00.
