The Department of Mathematics at UW-Madison is seeking a Printing Operator to join our talented administrative support team. One of the largest on campus, Mathematics is home to over 400 workers including faculty, academic staff, university staff, pre- and postdoctoral trainees; as well as graduate and undergraduate student employees. This position offers a dynamic and collaborative work environment including a broad range of challenging and varied administrative responsibilities. A successful candidate will be enthusiastic, motivated, and have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

The person in this role will be expected to manage the department copy center and also provide general support to members of the department by coordinating several operational and ad hoc administrative duties. This position functions as a primary contact person for departmental printing and supply needs and provides critical administrative support for faculty and instructional staff.

Department specific job responsibilities include:


  • Processing copy/print jobs on priority basis, including large-format printing operations

  • Maintaining the confidentiality of exams and distributing completed jobs to authorized recipients.

  • Overseeing the ordering of printer supplies and maintenance requests

  • Surveying faculty each semester for textbook requirements.

  • Preparing textbook orders for bookstores, and requesting desk copies as needed.

  • Maintain supply of departmental desk copies for checkout as needed.


This detail-oriented position requires excellent administrative, organizational, technical, and communication (verbal, written, and electronic) skills as well as computer proficiency with a variety of applications.

It requires considerable professionalism, confidentiality, independent initiative, sound judgement, analytic ability, and problem-solving skills. The successful candidate will have the ability to manage competing priorities as well as the ability to work independently in dealing with a diverse workload and varied responsibilities.

The ability to lift 50 pounds will be occasionally needed.

This position is part-time, 80% (32 hours per week). This position will be fully on-site and remote work is not available for this role. The typical work schedule is 32 hours per week Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:45 am - 4:30 pm. Actual schedule may vary depending on work volume.

This position is ongoing/renewable with an anticipated start date of November 10, 2025.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Performs basic routine maintenance, minor repairs, and upkeep on equipment
  • Assists in training lower level staff and peers on machines and operational work procedures, providing guidance on projects
  • Assists in preparing documentation (SOPs) for equipment and operational work procedures
  • Performs setup and programs and operates high-speed machines to produce products according to customer specifications at an advanced level
  • Works in partnership with internal teams to ensure completion of duties
  • Inspects products prior to packaging to ensure all specifications meet set standards
  • Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders

Compensation:

The typical starting salary for this position is $20.00 - $25.00 an hour depending on qualifications and experience. Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience using Microsoft Office and Google Suite for coordinating and processing work activities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, and levels of education


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 1 - 3 years of experience in a similar role is preferred. Entry level candidates will be considered and are encouraged to apply.

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
