The Research Specialist will play a central role in advancing funded research projects in the Crall lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Core responsibilities include: Running and maintaining critical laboratory and field experiments related to bee behavior and pollinator health. Collecting, curating, and organizing experimental and observational datasets. Providing animal care for experimental colonies, including daily monitoring, feeding, and maintenance of bees used in research. Supporting project management and coordination across multiple grant-funded research projects. Training and mentoring undergraduate and graduate researchers in proper laboratory and animal care procedures.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • Performs literature reviews and writes reports
  • Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials

The Department of Entomology at the University of Wisconsin - Madison is a world-class graduate training and research institution committed to advancing research in insect biology in both basic and applied contexts. We offer MS and Ph.D. degrees in Entomology and two undergraduate majors (Entomology & Global Health). Compensation:

The anticipated salary range for this position is $44,543 - $ 50,000. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with experimental design, data collection, and analysis in ecology, behavior, or related disciplines.

  • Demonstrated experience working independently as well as collaboratively in research teams.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience conducting field or laboratory research with insects, particularly bees (including animal care and maintenance).

  • Proficiency in data management and analysis using software such as R, Python, and knowledge of open-source hardware (e.g. Raspberry Pi), deep learning, and computer vision.

  • Familiarity with behavioral observation techniques, experimental manipulations, or ecological monitoring technologies.


Education:

Bachelor's Degree Required; Entomology, Biology, or related field Required
