What to Expect
As an Electronics Reliability Engineer, you will be at the forefront of enhancing the reliability of our innovative Energy and Charging products by performing in-depth failure analysis and investigating the underlying mechanisms of electronic failures within our Industrial Energy, Residential Energy, Charging, and Solar products during the design and development phase. Your role will involve conducting rigorous hands-on analysis and accelerated life testing to quantify component degradation and forecast long-term performance. With expertise in electronic circuit root cause analysis and utilizing hardware debugging techniques, you will deploy sophisticated electrical instrumentation and characterization tools such as x-ray Computed Tomography (CT) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Your findings will be crucial in identifying and rectifying design and material weaknesses, providing essential insights that drive the optimization of designs and fortify the robustness and dependability of Tesla's cutting-edge energy and charging solutions.

What You'll Do
  • Apply various inspection techniques to evaluate the state of health of electronic components and identify signs of degradation for diagnostics and prognostics of new Tesla designs during the development phase

  • Provide insights into hardware root causes of detected accelerated life test failures and recommend potential mitigations to address these issues for early Tesla design spins

  • Collaborate with colleagues across teams to drive effective communications with leadership to present results and propose solutions

  • Lead innovation in inspection methodologies and deepen the understanding of failure modes to optimize the remaining useful life for Tesla Energy & Charging products

  • Maintain a safe and efficient laboratory space by following safety and 5S best practices

  • Actively train colleagues on lab equipment usage and inspection methodologies, fostering a knowledgeable and skilled team

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience

  • Understanding of failure characterization and reliability of HV/LV electronics hardware with one or more years of relevant experience

  • Hands-on characterization of electronic components with a focus on power semiconductors (e.g. MOSFETs), but also including passives, connectors, adhesives, and insulation materials as needed

  • Working knowledge of testing methods employed to determine quality and reliability of electrical components preferred

  • Perform electrical characterization (IV curves, leakage, Rds(on), threshold drift, capacitance, partial discharge inception/extinction)

  • Experience using failure analysis techniques such as X-ray, CT, CSAM, cross-sectioning, optical microscopy, SEM, and EDX

  • Document and classify failure modes & mechanisms to feed design rules and supplier requirements

  • Knowledge of methods to design-in reliability for electronics, including electronic computer-aided design and mechanical computer-aided engineering (CAE) data into 3D finite element models (e.g. using Sherlock) a plus

  • Experience with high-voltage insulation & PD testing. Background in power electronics or PV/EV charging systems preferred

  • Understanding of potting/encapsulation materials, TIMs, and adhesives
