Key Details:



  • Compensation: $23-$25 an hour or based on level of experience
  • Housing: Reimbursement of up to $400/month provided for qualified applicants
  • Start date: flexible between November 1-15, 2025
  • End date: October 31, 2027 (with possibility of extension)
  • Location: Near Idaho Falls within Bingham and Bonneville counties
  • Additional details: Truck and WEST cellphone will be provided. GPS unit and other field equipment will also be provided by WEST; however, field technician must be equipped with and provide own suitable footwear (rugged hiking boots), appropriate field survey clothing, and professional-grade binoculars.





Job Summary: WEST is looking for one candidate to reside in or near Idaho Falls, Idaho. The primary responsibilities for this position are to conduct avian use surveys for eagles, other raptors, and both large and small birds in the region. There is a possibility of helping with other projects in the region including special-status species surveys for this wind project. Successful candidates must be able to work in a rural field setting, work well both independently and with others, handle navigating two track roads with a 4WD truck and heavy snow conditions in the winter with an ATV or UTV with tracks, and follow field and data entry protocols. Previous experience conducting avian surveys is required. Training will be provided. The weekly work schedule is somewhat flexible and will average to about 2.5 to 3 weeks of work per month. However, there may be weeks requiring shorter or longer hours depending on seasonal objectives and project workloads.



The successful candidate will be:



  • An independent self-motivated individual who is skilled in bird identification and has previous experience conducting avian use surveys
  • Comfortable working independently, in various (extreme) weather conditions with snow and terrain, and have a passion for outdoors.



Responsibilities include :



  • Conducting avian use surveys, eagle nest monitoring, and other seasonal wildlife surveys in large Project Area near Idaho Falls
  • Managing and maintaining accurate and detailed data collection including observing and recording avian activity.
  • Communicating clearly and effectively with crew lead and field supervisor
  • Ability to communicate with landowners and other members of the public
  • Ability and willingness to work as a team member and independently
  • Being comfortable and having experience with hazards typical of the environment (tough terrain, driving a four-wheel drive vehicle, extreme heat and cold). Job duties require bird identification and the use of a compass, GPS, paper and electronic map devices.

Job Requirements

Requirements:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree preferred
  • Must be able to identify birds by sight and sound for species in the Idaho Falls area; candidates experienced in bird identification will be given preference
  • Must have experience with ATV and UTV use with tracks and heavy snow conditions in winter. WEST will provide online and in-person ATV/UTV training through Health and Safety Department as part of the Project Safety Plan.
  • Previous experience on biological field studies and/or prior field experience preferred
  • Employee must be able to appear for work on time (surveys often begin as early as sunrise), maintain focus for long periods of time, follow instructions from manager and crew leader, maintain positive attitude, and accept guidance and constructive criticism. Precise and thorough data collection is essential.
  • Skilled use of topographic maps, compass, GPS units, and other field equipment is required
  • Must be able to safely drive an ATV and UTV with tracks and maintain equipment
  • Must be able to work independently and interact professionally and respectfully with project managers, clients, landowners, and other technicians
  • Must follow all WEST safety protocolsincluding the Project Safety Plan



Physical Requirements:



  • Applicants must be in good physical shape, as surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme
  • Field work will entail long hours of standing and observing, sometimes in inclement conditions
  • Most survey work will involve walking up to avian use points from 4WD truck and some points will require up to 6 miles of walking.



After an offer of employment is made, the candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and a DMV records check that meets WEST's minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company. A valid driver's license will be required. Candidates must adhere to all health and safety requirements.
