Position Summary
Reporting to the University Librarian, the Collections & Discovery Librarian provides leadership for the acquisition, description, discovery, and ongoing management of the library's print and electronic collections. This position oversees the full lifecycle of resources in all formats and plays a key role in optimizing access and discovery through the Ex Libris Alma Library Services Platform ( LSP) and Primo VE discovery interface.
The Collections & Discovery Librarian coordinates Collections Management operations, including acquisitions, cataloging/metadata, serials, and e-resources, and ensures that workflows support an exceptional user experience. The position also manages the library materials budget, collaborates on collection development, and serves as the primary contact with the Western North Carolina Library Network ( WNCLN) and other consortial partners to leverage shared systems and resources effectively.

Required Education/Experience/Skills

  • Master's degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent degree recognized by ALA).
  • Commitment to high-quality service and support of the academic needs of students and faculty.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills

  • Three or more years of progressively responsible experience in technical services or collection management in an academic library setting.
  • Experience with the Ex Libris Alma LSP and Primo VE, or comparable integrated library and discovery systems.
  • Experience managing library materials budgets and developing workflows that support fiscal responsibility.
  • Experience with acquisitions, serials, and/or cataloging in a shared systems environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of technical services operations, metadata standards, and the resource lifecycle for both print and electronic materials.
  • Familiarity with current cataloging and metadata standards (e.g., RDA, MARC, LCSH, LC Classification), linked data concepts, and emerging practices.
  • Understanding of the principles, practices, and tools of electronic resource management, including licensing, authentication, troubleshooting, and usage analysis.
  • Ability to configure and optimize workflows in Alma and Primo VE to improve resource discovery and access.
  • Proficiency with OCLC systems and bibliographic utilities.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in person, in writing, and online.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor, and evaluate library staff and student workers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with colleagues and partners in a diverse environment.
