Established in 1993, the School of Filmmaking combines rigorous professional training with unparalleled facilities, equipment and resources. The program's mission is to train talented students for professional careers in the film and television industries and stresses the collaborative nature of filmmaking in a rigorous conservatory atmosphere. The School of Filmmaking's goal is to produce the "complete" filmmaker - a storyteller of unusual vision who knows how to use and value the components of the filmmaking arts. The School of Filmmaking offers a BFA with concentrated studies in Animation, Cinematography, Directing, Editing & Sound Design, Producing, Production Design, and Screenwriting, and an MFA in Creative Producing and Screenwriting.
Primary Description of Work
The Center for Design Innovation ( CDI) and UNCSA School of Filmmaking is seeking a highly skilled and motivated full-time Immersive Lab Technician. This technician will play a crucial role in supporting the operation and maintenance of our cutting-edge immersive technology environment. Working collaboratively with the School of Filmmaking Dean, faculty, METL Producing Director, and METL Creative Director, the Immersive Lab Technician will be instrumental in facilitating student and faculty projects related to immersive media.

8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
Technical Training and Support

  • Provide comprehensive training to students on the operation of LED screens, Vicon motion capture systems, and relevant 2D/3D software and video equipment.
  • Offer hands-on support during classes and project execution.


Equipment Maintenance
  • Perform regular maintenance and troubleshooting of all video and computer equipment within the lab.
Project Development
  • Contribute to the development of projects that align with the missions of METL and the UNCSA School of Filmmaking.
Collaboration and Innovation

  • Collaborate with the METL Creative Director and the METL team to develop innovative VFX and immersive projects and content.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry best practices.

Outreach and Promotion

  • Conduct tours of the METL facilities and deliver off-campus presentations to promote the work of METL and its related programs.
  • Support collaboration across campus by engaging with other UNCSA art colleges.

Center for Design Innovation (CDI) Duties

  • Assist Associate Director of Budget & Facilities Management:
  • Set up audio/visual equipment for classes, meetings, and events.
  • Maintain CDI's Databox (mini server) used by School of Filmmaking.
  • Create and maintain content on TV monitors in the atrium to reflect university content.
  • Maintaining and tracking CDI fixed assets and inventory
  • Evaluate and surplus outdated equipment.
  • Maintain a listing of checked out CDI inventory for School of Filmmaking use.
  • Maintain internal and external Film spaces ensuring they comply with fire safety rules and regulations.
  • Work with METL Producing and Creative Directors to ensure that METL guests are greeted and taken to their meeting location.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in audiovisual equipment operation and maintenance, graphic design, and/or photography; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The ideal candidate will be a proactive and adaptable technician with a passion for emerging technologies and a strong commitment to fostering a collaborative learning environment. The candidate will be comfortable working with a diverse range of artistic disciplines and possess the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts.

Two years of professional experience interfacing with digital production, animation, and emerging technologies, including VR, AI, 360 filmmaking, LED sound stage work, and motion capture.

Demonstrated proficiency in immersive technology technical skills.

Strong ability to train technical skills and introduce fundamental digital production concepts to students.

Excellent teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse artistic backgrounds.

Self-motivated and highly organized.

Ability to learn and support the workflow of other UNCSA art colleges.
