Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders ( CSD) offers a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology. As one of the campuses of the University of North Carolina ( UNC) system, North Carolina Central University is located in Durham near Research Triangle Park. The Department of Communication Science and Disorders ( CSD) is a full-time, campus-based graduate program and features a curriculum that integrates research, evidence-based clinical experiences, and a focus on serving populations from varied backgrounds. The Master of Science degree program in speech-language pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation ( CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The NCCU Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic provides speech, language, and hearing evaluations and treatment services for clients across the lifespan.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to provide clinical experiences that foster and provide the graduate students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and clinical hours required to meet ASHA certification and North Carolina licensure standards in Speech-Language Pathology. This position will facilitate alignment with and maintain accreditation by the Council for Academic Accreditation ( CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Pathology. Duties of the position include but are not limited to: providing supervision for graduate students during clinical practicum experiences, ensuring compliance with professional standards and university policies, maintaining documentation, and collaborating with faculty and community partners. Those with administration experience may assist with the coordination and management of community-based practicum placements.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Candidates with expertise in neurogenic and acquired communication disorders, multilingual populations, and/ or complex communication needs will receive preferential consideration. Other areas of expertise will also be considered. Candidates must be familiar with the current trends of the profession and have knowledge of disabilities across the lifespan. A commitment to effective clinical education and student development is required.
Minimum Education/Experience
Earned Master's in Speech-Language Pathology ( SLP) or Communication Sciences and Disorders. Three years of experience as a certified SLP is preferred.
Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation
Certification- Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from ASHA; possess or eligible for NC licensure in Speech-Language Pathology; documentation of two (2) hours of professional development/continuing education in clinical instruction/supervision if offered the position.
