Job Summary
The Truck Driver/Shop Assistant safely and efficiently operates commercial vehicles for local freight transport and supports transload and truck repair shop operations through hands-on assistance and skill development.
Primary Objectives
- Safely transport freight and equipment within the local area using a Class A commercial vehicle.
- Maintain compliance with all applicable driving and safety regulations.
- Assist mechanics in the transload and truck repair shop with routine tasks and learn basic mechanical procedures.
- Support operational efficiency through equipment handling, container preparation, and shop upkeep.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Drive commercial trucks locally to pick up and deliver freight, equipment, and containers.
- Inspect vehicles before and after trips and complete Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR).
- Hook and unhook containers and operate landing gear using proper safety techniques.
- Open and close container doors, sweep containers, and prepare them for delivery.
- Attach and detach air and brake hoses, climbing onto the tractor catwalk as needed.
- Refuel trucks and check fluid levels including oil and radiator coolant.
- Maintain accurate Hours of Service (HOS) logs in accordance with federal regulations.
- Communicate with dispatch or supervisor via radio or phone for routing and updates.
- Assist shop mechanics with basic tasks such as tool handling, parts organization, and minor repairs.
- Participate in shop clean-up, inventory checks, and equipment staging.
- Learn and apply safety procedures relevant to shop and yard operations.
- Other duties as assigned.

Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and acceptable driving record required
- Current Medical Examiner's Certificate required
Work Experience
- 2+ years experience as a Commercial Class A driver required
- Prior experience in a mechanic shop environment preferred

- Mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform basic truck maintenance.

- Operate a manual transmission commercial vehicle competently and safely in broad range of road, weather, and traffic conditions. Safely lift and maneuver objects and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds frequently. Climb up/down 8-10 feet, bend down, kneel down, crouch, squat, and twist as required to secure load. Safely execute overhead reaching and chain handling; wrench or pull on ratchets with up to 50 lbs. of pressure. Must be able to climb on transport, enter and exit vehicles being transported with reduced entry clearance (24") frequently. Requires excellent visual acuity and manual dexterity. Stand, walk over uneven surface for distances up to 500 feet.
Working Environment
This role requires work that may involve the following environmental conditions:
- Freight warehouse facility, office, outdoor yard and lot, and workshop settings, where hot, humid, cold, and other inclement weather conditions may occur.

The salary range listed is based on the geographic zone associated with this role: Tacoma, WA. If you are applying to work from a different location, the salary range may vary to align with the cost of labor and market conditions in that area. Starting pay will be determined by job-related factors including experience, education, and business needs and may be modified at any time.
Zone 2: $26.00 - $30.00
