  • Applicants will be considered for a pool of tutors in two (2) or more of the following disciplines: writing, research, math (algebra, calculus, statistics), computer skills (spreadsheet, word processing, networking, software applications, programming), business (accounting, finance, marketing), chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science programming, sustainability, technology, electronics, social sciences, languages.
  • Tutors will be expected to complete the Tutor Certification Course (CRLA), which is free and available through Lane Community College. Visit the TRiO website for more information.

Salary/Compensation Statement:

Grant Statement:
Continuation of position is contingent upon grant-funding. The TRiO- SSS grant have been funded through August, 2026 and has received notification of it's next 5-year award that will begin September, 2026.
Working Schedule:

  • Part-time position; variable work hours based on student and department needs.
  • Schedule may vary with hours increasing during peak periods up to 40 hours per week, up to 1039 hours in a 12 month period; prefer to schedule 8-15 hours per week.

Required QUALIFICATIONS




Required Education:
Two (2) years of post-secondary education or training with course work in the area of assignment is required.
Required Experience:

  • Two (2) years of experience in the specialty area is required with one (1) year being in the capacity of tutoring, teacher's aid, or assistant to the student learning experience.
  • Experience with Zoom both as a presenter of information and end-user.
  • College level courses in focus of tutor subject with 3.5 gpa or better.

Preferred Education

  • Preference to individual with higher level Math ( Calculus and above) and/or Chemistry and or Physics.
  • Successful attainment of a college degree.
  • College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with tutoring college Writing, Math, Science, Computer Science, Social Science subjects.
  • Experience tutoring, mentoring or teaching, particular to adult learners.
  • Experience working with individuals with different learning styles and/or barriers to educational success.
  • Current or previous college student.

Position Purpose:
The TRiO tutors support individual student learning, understanding, and application of writing, math, social and hard sciences, business, and general study disciplines. To support student success in areas such as navigation of Lane web systems, i.e. Moodle or myLane, class course work, web study aides, and college resources. Assist via specific communication styles, including but not limited to online platforms.
Essential Functions:

  • This hourly time sheet assignment is responsible for student instructional support, tutoring in multiple subjects and providing a hospitable and supportive learning environment for each individual.
  • Assess individual student tutoring needs and learning styles using culturally competent communication skills.
  • Maintain current knowledge of available tutoring programs and services, information on additional student resources; referring students to others as necessary.
  • Enthusiastically assist students in one-to-one tutoring sessions, enhancing learning and appreciation of a subject.
  • Consistently demonstrate the college's learning mission; including transforming student lives through a deeper understanding of learning.
  • Support students in small work groups, role model teamwork skills.
  • Ensure duties are completed in a positive, professional and approachable manner.
  • Take initiative and the responsibility to tutor students in any subject (with or without knowledge of subject); thereby demonstrating how to be a life long learner.
  • Attend and actively participate in all tutor/staff meetings.
  • Ensure all policies and procedures for tutoring and working are complied with; follow college policies and procedures.
  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of a tutor coordinator or program director/manager. A tutor coordinator may train, assign work, provide priorities and be available to troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Detailed guidelines and instructions are provided. General daily routines are performed independently according to these guidelines. Work is reviewed for quality of services.
Physical Demands/Working Environment:
This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that includes office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. This position requires that an employee be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform cognitive and psychometric work for more than six (6) hours a day. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Work safely.
