The salary range for this position takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.

At WGU, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their position, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is:

Job Description

What You'll Do:

WGU's Site Security team plays a critical role in creating and maintaining physical workplaces that support our university's mission, protect our employees, and guard our physical and intellectual assets. The Site Security Coordinator is responsible for implementing and maintaining a rigorous security program to protect personnel, visitors, property, and assets at the site. This role combines operational security oversight, emergency response, access control administration, and proactive threat management. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with access control systems and CCTV, strong incident response skills, and a proven ability to train staff and coordinate cross-functional security efforts. In addition to security duties, the role acts as a receptionist with a security-minded approach, handling front-desk responsibilities in a way that preserves safety, privacy, and efficiency while providing a positive and meaningful first impression to guests, contractors, dignitaries, and students.

Main Responsibilities Include:

Security Program Oversight

  • Maintain service levels and standards and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Stay current on industry practices and security hardware/software; apply updates as appropriate.

  • Communicate security status, updates, and risks using approved channels and dashboards.

Security with a Customer Support Mindset

  • Greet visitors, vendors, and guests in a professional and secure manner; verify identity and visit purpose per WGU policy.

  • Screen and log inquiries, provide direction, and issue visitor badges consistent with security policies.

  • Answer general inquiries while ensuring privacy and information is protected in accordance with FERPA guidelines.

  • Perform routine front-desk tasks during shift transitions or peak times, ensuring minimal disruption to security operations.

Access Control Management

  • Design and implement site-wide access protocols for campus building(s).

  • Issue and manage employee access badges; coordinate temporary and replacement badge issuance in accordance with WGU security policies.

  • Create access card entry reports for investigations and projects; maintain department- and individual-level access data.

  • Administer visitor management processes and collaborate with departments on access needs.

Physical Security and Monitoring

  • Administer, monitor, and optimize CCTV/VMS for critical areas, entrances, and sensitive zones.

  • Conduct periodic site assessments to identify safety and security risks and suggest remedial measures.

  • Lead and coordinate incident response for security incidents, workplace safety events, medical incidents, and emergencies; activate emergency procedure as appropriate; liaise with local authorities.

Incident Response, Investigation, and Playbooks

  • Conduct timely post-incident investigations; produce formal incident reports in accordance with policies and procedures.

  • Develop and maintain incident response playbooks, SOPs, and related documentation.

  • Ensure proper documentation for investigations, policies, proposals, and strategic initiatives.

Emergency Management and Business Continuity

  • Assist with emergency management, contingency planning, drills, and activation of response procedures.

  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders, public safety, and campus partners during incidents and events.

Project and Technology Coordination

  • Oversee site technology maintenance and/or installation projects and administration of power, network, and security system monitoring/alerts.

  • Recommend security system enhancements for renovations, and upgrades for existing facilities.

  • Manage vendor partnerships and ensure third-party entities comply with security and campus policies.

Training and Awareness

  • Develop and deliver security training and awareness campaigns (policies, de-escalation, emergency procedures).

  • Promote a culture of security through drills, communications, and hands-on practice.

Policy, Compliance, and Governance

  • Ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and industry standards relevant to WGU operations.

  • Participate in safety committees and provide security input for new projects, events, and changes in site layout.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Management

  • Coordinate security activities with Facilities, IT, People & Talent, Legal, site leadership, and office operations teams when appropriate.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Capable of assisting with facilities-related tasks as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities You'll Need to Be Successful:

  • Hands-on experience with electronic badge access systems, CCTV/VMS, security audits, policy creation, site IT equipment.

  • Strong incident management mindset; capable of cross-functional coordination across multiple locations.

  • Knowledge of reception/visitor management, front-desk operations, and how to balance customer service with security requirements.

  • Familiarity with FERPA, CI, HIPAA, and other information security/compliance requirements as applicable to higher education.

  • Proficiency in risk assessment models and security management for campus and corporate environments.

  • Current understanding of access control hardware/software; ability to administer and troubleshoot systems.

  • Excellent situational awareness, judgment, and decision-making under pressure. Strong written and verbal communication; ability to translate technical concepts to diverse audiences.

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with diverse university constituencies; ability to influence without formal authority.

  • Training design and delivery experience; ability to engage non-security staff.

  • Ability to work independently in a dynamic environment; aptitude for analytical planning and forecasting.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Associates Degree from an accredited university in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Security, or a related field. Will consider experience in conjunction with or in lieu of a formal degree.

Experience:

  • 3 years of high performance in a law enforcement, safety or security-related role

  • Ability to achieve CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification within 6 months of hire

  • Strong working knowledge of access control and video monitoring platforms

  • Exceptional in-person and written communication skills

  • A calm demeanor

  • Commitment to confidentiality and ethical handling of information

  • The ability to think clearly and decisively in high-stress situations

  • Willing to travel as needed to support security operations

Experience in lieu of education:

  • Equivalent relevant experience performing the essential functions of this job may substitute for education degree requirements. Generally, equivalent relevant experience is defined as 1 year of experience for 1 year of education and is the discretion of the hiring manager.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with ServiceNow or a similar ticketing platform

  • Certified Protection Professional (CPP)

  • Physical Security Professional (PSP)

  • Professional Certified Investigator (PCI)

  • OSHA or equivalent safety training

Position & Application Details
