The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Columbia Orthopedics is seeking a dedicated Nurse Practitioner to join our Shoulder Elbow & Sports Medicine team, working alongside Dr. Michael Knudsen and Dr. Robert Christian. This is an outpatient-role focused on providing high-quality care to patients before and after surgery. NYP & Columbia are consistently ranked in the top academic medical centers in the United States.

Responsibilities



  • Treats patients with orthopedic issues and manage inpatient and outpatient services and/or other situations.
  • Work independently or collaboratively with the orthopedic surgery attending and resident staff as a well as the nurses, therapists, social workers and other support personnel who take part in caring for orthopedic surgery patients.
  • Chart preparation according to protocol and orders appropriate x-rays for office hours using the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Evaluates and diagnoses patients
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient's age-specific needs.
  • Administers injections/Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment modalities.
  • Monitors effectiveness of prescribed intervention.
  • Remove/apply dressings, sutures, staples, slings and/or braces
  • Reviews pre-operative instructions and explains the surgical process to patients who are about to have surgery
  • Performs patient education duties; hands out brochures, and directs patients to specific Internet sites for more information
  • Prescribe post op pain medication(s) as directed
  • See post-op patients for wound checks and post-op care and notify attending of findings if abnormal
  • Reviews post-operative discharge instructions with patients including regarding wound care and pain management.
  • Triage incoming telephone calls; instructs patient and family regarding treatment instruction, then documents action taken in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Sends patient telephones prescription requests to pharmacy and documents action in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Assist with patient correspondence as needed, i.e. forms, letters of medical necessity, school notes, insurance inquiries, etc.
  • Assist patients in meeting health needs by identifying potential or existing problems, exploring available alternatives and providing support to the patient and family members to make an informed decision regarding health care.
  • Facilitates the patient's transition within and between healthcare settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, discharging and home care including visiting nurse referrals.
  • Formulate patient care protocols and critical pathways.
  • Assist with development; participate in design and implementation of clinical research trials.
  • Sees patients independently, performs in depth work up, and refers patients to surgeons.
  • Serve as a Mentor to new-to-practice NPs and student NPs via the Columbia University School of Nursing program.

Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelors degree or equivalent in education and experience
  • Five years of related experience

  • New York RN and NP licensure
  • New Jersey RN and NP licensure
  • National certifications
  • DEA number


Preferred Qualifications




  • Prior experience in management of orthopedic patients



  • Clinical Doctorate preferred



  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
