POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Director, Tax provides strategic leadership and oversight for all tax functions at FedEx Freight, including tax strategy, planning, compliance, and reporting. This role ensures alignment between business objectives and tax governance while managing relationships with service providers under a managed-services operating model

Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer, the Director partners closely with Finance, Treasury, Legal, and external advisors to ensure tax processes and policies support the company's compliance requirements, operational efficiency, and strategic growth

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership and Oversight

  • Lead all aspects of tax compliance, reporting, and planning across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada

  • Establish a robust tax governance framework aligned with corporate risk management standards

  • Manage service provider performance, ensuring quality, timeliness, and accountability

  • Develop and mentor a team of tax professionals focused on accuracy and continuous improvement

Governance, Policy, and Controls

  • Partner with the CAO to integrate tax governance with financial reporting and internal controls

  • Ensure compliance with SOX, internal controls, and all applicable tax regulations

  • Monitor tax risks, oversee audit and controversy strategy, and maintain documentation to support positions

Strategic Collaboration

  • Advise the CFO, CAO, and business leaders on tax implications of business decisions, capital structure, and M&A

  • Work closely with Treasury and Legal on intercompany transactions, funding structures, and transfer pricing

  • Stay current on legislative and regulatory developments, assessing impact on the business and communicating key updates

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field required

  • Master's degree in taxation, Accounting, or a Juris Doctor (JD) preferred

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or licensed attorney preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive corporate tax experience within a multinational company or Big Four public accounting firm

  • At least 5 years in a senior tax leadership role (Director or VP level) overseeing tax strategy, compliance, and planning

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Deep knowledge U.S. federal, state, and international tax laws, including transfer pricing, tax provision (ASC 740), and global compliance frameworks.

  • Ability to anticipate future challenges and develop forward-looking tax strategies that support both short-term and long-term business objectives.

  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills-capable of translating complex tax matters for leadership and non-tax stakeholders.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency.

  • Experience leading automation, process improvement, and technology adoption initiatives within a tax or finance environment.

  • Skilled at developing relationships and working cross-functionally across finance, legal, treasury, and operations to achieve corporate objectives

  • Demonstrated commitment to ethical conduct, accuracy, and transparency in tax reporting.
