About the Job

This is a 2-year, grant funded position; employment beyond the initial 2 years is dependent on obtaining additional funding.

Description of Position:
The Lead Veterinary Technician is integral to the successful launch and establishment of the clinic's educational and clinical services. This position will be initially responsible for working with the Clinic Director to set up clinic policy, procedure and workflow in the pre-opening phase. Once the clinic is open, this position will be the main patient care technician and be involved in activities related to growth.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Certified Veterinary Technician with strong knowledge of patient care, equipment and procedure in a clinic environment. The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic academic environment and possess a strong passion for mentorship and program development. In its initial phase, this role will be instrumental in the implementation of clinical operations. As the program matures, the position will evolve, offering a blend of clinical practice, veterinary student instruction, and operational leadership in coordination with the clinic supervisor.

Job Requirements:
Initial phase: 40% clinical care, 55% project management, 5% other
Operative phase: 85% clinical care, 10% project management, 5% other

Essential Functions:
Clinical Care - 40%-85%
Under the direction of a DVM performs a variety of medical and diagnostic procedures; may perform intravenous and related therapies (i.e. fluids, chemotherapies, and anesthesia), obtain fluid or tissue samples, perform biopsy techniques, etc.
Provide excellent service to DVM's, DVM students, and medical team that support quality patient care.
Facilitate open communication and teamwork among clinical care team members (DVM's students, veterinary technicians, etc.) in support of positive patient outcomes and excellent patient care.
Must be able to restrain and handle animals and/or assist with animal restraint and handling.
Answers questions and explains or demonstrates procedures and equipment for clients, interns, veterinary students, and technician students.
Performs record-keeping tasks related to medical procedures, including recording of: procedures completed, supplies used, patient status, client communications, census information, etc.

Project Management - 55%-10%
Acts as liaison with VMC departments and staff to ensure coverage for regulatory needs such as OSHA, radiology, and others
As part of program development team, advises on emerging staffing and other needs
Coordinates veterinary technician pool staff who may work shifts with the clinic
Work closely with Director and future leadership positions within Spectrum of Care clinic to ensure coordinated patient care and student teaching as the program grows and is implemented.

Additional Responsibilities - 5%
Maintain controlled drug log
Maintains a clean environment in the hospital area and ensures that these areas are adequately ordered, stocked and that equipment is in working order.
Participates in daily rounds.
Other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Clinician, or Director

Days/Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduate of an Animal Health Technician Program plus two years experience and certification in specialty area or five years of veterinary medical technical experience.
Certified as an MVMA/MAVT technician.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching veterinary students in a clinical environment. Five years of experience as a technician in a patient care setting. Interest in developing practice management and leadership skills.
Problem solving skills, strong interpersonal skills, knowledge of veterinary medicine terminology, willingness to be flexible to meet patient care needs, knowledge of proper restraint and handling small animals.
Experience in team leadership

What is the Spectrum of Care clinic?

Spectrum of Care is an emerging pedagogy to intentionally teach clinical problem solving, flexible treatment plans and contextualized care. Many seasoned general practitioners already practice this way, but it is a learning gap that has been identified at teaching institutions. The Spectrum of Care Clinic at UMN is a teaching clinic designed to provide clinical year veterinary students primary case responsibility with a broad range of clinical presentations outside the walls of a tertiary referral center.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $28.42 to $31.34; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment
