Position Summary

The Honors College is seeking an undergraduate student interested in community-based research and environmental restoration to assist the Principal Investigator with data collection, transcription, and analysis for 5-10 hours/week during fall 2025 and spring 2026.

This position offers the opportunity to gain experience in a large community-engaged research project. You'll collaborate with New Mexico-based organizations such as RiverSource, Hermit's Peak Watershed Alliance, and the Albuquerque Wildlife Federation. As a Research Assistant, you'll contribute to understanding socioeconomic dimensions of human-nature interactions in restoration, filling a gap in the literature regarding New Mexico. The final outputs of the project include a peer-reviewed manuscript and a white paper detailing successful strategies for organizing community restoration projects..

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Data Collection: Conducting interviews with community members participating in restoration activities following the HPCC wildfire, scheduled between August and December 2025
  • Transcription: Assisting with the transcription of interview data
  • Analysis: Supporting the thematic analysis of transcribed interviews and photovoice images using NVivo

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student at the University of New Mexico (UNM)
  • Willingness to comply with protocols for human subjects research
  • Strong writing, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills

  • Experience or strong interest in assisting with qualitative data collection
  • Strong listening and transcription skills for processing interview data
  • Experience using NVivo for thematic analysis
  • CITI human subjects research training certification
