Position Summary
As a nationally accredited program with a strong educational component in The University of New Mexico School of Medicine, the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) investigates any death occurring across the state of New Mexico that is sudden, violent, untimely, unexpected or where a person is found dead and the cause of death is unknown. The OMI, which is a special program within the Department of Pathology, determines the cause and manner of death in these cases, and provides formal death certification.

OMI is currently looking for a Deputy Medical Investigator to join our team. This position responds to death scenes, including scenes of death that are natural, suicide, accidental, homicide or undetermined in nature. Deputy Medical Investigators examine decedents, conduct on scene investigations alongside law enforcement, photographs the scene and secures decedents for transport. Being a Deputy Medical Investigator for the Office of the Medical Investigator is being part of an office serving the State of New Mexico.

Our ideal candidate will be a team player and willing to learn. This person must be able to work with decedents in various types of scene settings and in various body conditions, in all climates. Extreme weather conditions, graphic scenes and smells are common experiences in this role. We need someone with a great deal of resilience and resolve. High level of confidentially, professionalism, discipline and emotional intelligence is required in this role. This role may require testifying in court, working extended hours, and navigating highly sensitive situations with families, funeral homes, law enforcement and peer professionals. This position requires the ability to drive company vehicles, move and maneuver in excess of 300lbs, possibly in tight or on uneven surfaces, pass and maintain the required certification for ABMDI and exercise compliance with policy, procedure and all applicable laws.

This position requires work on 2nd and 3rd shifts and the ability to work 10-hour shifts.
This position is unionized and schedule is determined by bid.
Work on holidays and weekends also required.

Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a valid UNM Driver's License.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Pre-employment background investigation required.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Must achieve Registry level certification with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigations (ABMDI) within one year of employment.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.


Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in a related field; at least 1 year of experience directly related the to duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.

  • Bilingual
  • Experience in the death industry or as a first responder.
