Position Overview
| Primary Purpose of Position |
Reporting to the University Controller, the
Director of Financial Reporting provides leadership and oversight of the University's general accounting operations, financial reporting, and capital accounting functions. The position is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the University's general ledger, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, coordinating the year-end close, preparing audit documentation, managing investment and endowment reporting, and ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and institutional accounting standards.
This position plays a critical role in safeguarding the University's financial data, maintaining a comprehensive system of internal controls, and ensuring that reported results comply with
Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP),
Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards, and
UNC System and
State of North Carolina requirements. The Director provides expert guidance to financial and operational units, serves as a liaison to external auditors and state agencies, and acts as back-up to the University Controller. |
| Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The Financial Reporting Department is a unit of the Comptroller's Office and provides current, comprehensive and accurate financial information to provide accountability and transparency to University, the people of North Carolina and beyond concerning its fiduciary resources. |
| Minimum Requirements |
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or financial reporting.
Demonstrated knowledge of governmental or higher education accounting standards. |

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.- Experience with state government or higher education financial reporting systems (Banner, NCFS, Jaggaer).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of GAAP, GASB, and state accounting principles.
- Strong technical expertise in Banner Finance, NCFS, and financial reporting systems.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex accounting operations, reconciliations, and financial close cycles.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective leadership and interpersonal skills to collaborate across diverse units.
- Strong communication skills-both written and verbal-with the ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly.
