Research Assistant in Microbial Ecology Lab at Saint Louis University The Soil Microbial Ecology Laboratory at Saint Louis University is looking for a Research Assistant with a background in Soil/Environmental science, Biology, Ecology, and Soil microbiology to join an interdisciplinary team. The Research Assistant supports investigators by performing moderately complex research and experimentation following established protocols. This position performs routine lab and equipment maintenance, such as cleaning glassware, counter tops, and equipment, sets-up and operates various scientific apparatus, and assists with research projects. This position also performs various clerical and editorial duties, to include compiling, processing, and analyzing data, as well as performing training duties. This position is beingfundedby agrantand/ordesignatedsourceand therefore continuation in the position is contingent upon funding availability. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Research Assistant will assist the research team in conducting soil sampling in the field. The ideal candidate will also be familiar with soil incubation experiments, measurement of soil nitrogen and carbon content, as well as basic pipetting, PCR, and some other molecular techniques. The major tasks of this position will include: * Traveling to the field and conducting soil sampling in the field. * Performs various assays; sterilizes equipment; separates and purifies various materials and substances using such techniques as chromatography and electrophoresis; orders laboratory supplies;interprets experimental test data * Sets-up and operates various scientific apparatus; sets-up and operates spectrophotometer, and centrifuges, incubators, homogenizers * Compiles processes and analyzes data; records research procedures and results; files and maintains records; codes data for input for electronic data processing; inputs and retrieves data using computers * Performs other duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES * Broad knowledge involving laboratory techniques * Knowledge of the use and preparation of culture media, chemicals, and reagents * Ability to follow verbal and written instructions * Ability to maintain records and inventories * Ability to operate a personal computer MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have the following qualifications to be considered: 3) Must have a valid driver's license and maintain active personal car insurance throughout the duration of employment 4) Evidence of excellency in communicating science.
