Job Description

The Opportunity

Embry-Riddle is now hiring an Instructor of Aviation English at the Daytona Beach Campus. This 10-month non-tenure track faculty position is a joint appointment with ERAU's Department of Flight and Embry-Riddle Language Institute. This is a multi-faceted position with a primary role of providing English instruction to international students who have not yet met the minimum English language proficiency for academic study as well as international flight students who have not met the FAA Aviation English Language Standards to begin flight training.

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching & Instructional Support:

  • Teach two FA135 Department of Flight classes in the fall, and one class each in spring and summer semesters.
  • Teach two ERLI classes each semester (fall, spring, summer).
  • Plan instruction aligned with ERLI & Aviation English for Flight Training Curriculum objectives.
  • Continuously improve course content and ensure full curriculum coverage.
  • Submit syllabi, course plans, exams, alerts, and required documentation on time.
  • Maintain daily attendance and weekly grade records.
  • Monitor and assess student progress using appropriate evaluation methods.
  • Hold office hours and provide tutoring as needed.
  • Advise students on academic challenges and success strategies.
  • Foster a student-centered approach to learning and service.
  • Attend and contribute to required departmental meetings.

English for Flight Training Assessment (EFTA):

  • Administer and rate EFTA tests.
  • Collaborate with the Aviation English Coordinator on test development and refinement.

Aviation English Program (AEP):

  • Tutor flight students individually or in the Aviation Learning Center.
  • Support course design and learning objectives for Aviation English.
  • Assist in developing new curriculum for professional education and flight training.

Professional Development:

  • Engage in professional development per ERLI policy.
  • Stay current in the field of Aviation English.

Additional Duties:

  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Aviation English Coordinator and ERLI Director.

About the Department

Embry-Riddle Language Institute (ERLI) is a CEA accredited intensive, English for academic purposes program. ERLI's mission is to provide high-quality English language instruction that prepares speakers of other languages to enter and succeed in EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University or another U.S. university. ERLI is an academic unit within Center for International Education.

The Department of Flight provides the training for all the programs at the university that require flight training. The department has three buildings, a hangar, and more than 100 aircraft - all high-end, electronically supported models. Facilities also include a bank of simulators that includes the highest level of simulations available anywhere. The department has 200 flight instructors, plus 40 technicians performing support and maintenance in the hangar.

Qualifications

Required Education: Candidate must possess as a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics or a related field.

Preferred Education: Bachelor's Degree in Aviation or closely related field in addition to required Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics or a related field.

Required Qualifications:

  • Comfortable using computer technology for administrative and teaching purposes, including learning management systems, virtual meeting platforms, and other online tools.
  • Minimum of one year of experience teaching at the college level, in a US-based Intensive English Program (IEP).
  • Experience teaching Aviation English, with a strong understanding of the specific language and communication needs of pilots and aviation professionals.
  • Experience in second language assessment, with knowledge of best practices for assessing language proficiency and developing assessment tools.
  • Native or near-native oral and written English fluency, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Extremely proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, with the ability to use spreadsheets to track and analyze data.

  • Effective communication and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly and concisely convey information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
