GENERAL SUMMARY: Provides leadership and supervision of daily operations of the Respiratory Care department. Ensures the delivery of quality, patient-centered care in a manner reflective of the Medical Center's mission, vision, values and beliefs. Possesses managerial and clinical skills appropriate to the scope of responsibility. Manages the cost center's fiscal, material and human resources emphasizing staff retention strategies. Participates in department, division and organization-wide initiatives focusing on regulatory compliance and performance improvement. Maintains 24/7 accountability for assigned department and its activities. Supervises respiratory care practitioners, respiratory care assistants and support staff that deliver care to the patients. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Develops and initiates service/program activities congruent with organizational goals. 3. *Promotes interdisciplinary and/or interdepartmental collaboration to optimize efficient and effective patient-centered care delivery. 4. *Develops, implements and analyzes adherence to organizational and department specific standards of care and policies and procedures. 5. Incorporates age-specific and cultural considerations in the delivery of patient care. 6. Engages in assigned hospital management, clinical and organizational meetings. 7. *Develops and manages a capital, operational and human resources budget based on strategic priorities, best practices and organizational standards; analyses and resolves variances. 8. *Recruits and manages staff to demonstrate behaviors consistent with Bryan Beliefs and Bryan Core Values; acts as chief retention officer for area of responsibility. 9. *Conducts timely staff performance appraisals ensuring staff competence while emphasizing staff retention strategies through coaching and individual development. 10. *Ensures ongoing compliance with accrediting and regulatory standards. 11. *Promotes evidence-based practice; interprets patient, physician, staff and other customer satisfaction results and drives improvement; evaluates occurrences, patient, physician, and staff concerns and seeks resolution utilizing supportive organizational procedures/methods. 12. *Timely, objectively, and constructively coaches staff as appropriate when practice and/or safety issues are observed or reported; ensures appropriate corrective actions are completed for staff when there is a failure to meet job performance expectations. 13. *Ensures that staff are oriented to policies, procedures, protocols, standards of care and practice. 14. *Ensures that staff assignments are consistent with verified staff competencies. 15. *Schedules team meetings with staff to provide and solicit information, plans and problem-solves including general staff meetings with key individuals or groups; keeps minutes and distributes to all management team members. 16. Participates in product evaluation studies and consequent decision-making activities. 17. Works collaboratively with the leadership team to ensure that meaningful leader/employee rounding is completing according to span of control expectations, if appropriate. 18. Ensures staff members receive an orientation and ongoing educational development based upon organization and service/unit requirements and individualized employee needs/expectations. 19. Recommends prioritized annual competency requirements based on the needs and scope of the department and identified job performance expectations. 20. Responsible for creating an environment of safety conducive to quality outcomes. 21. Ensures that staff participate and support quality initiatives, team and committee assignments. 22. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 23. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient's growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies. 2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 3. Knowledge of respiratory care practices, procedures and processes. 4. Knowledge of service-related Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) standards. 5. Knowledge of budget/financial management principles and practices. 6. Skill in supervising, mentoring, instructing and evaluating the work of professional and other staff. 7. Ability to remain competent to perform all duties of an Advanced Practitioner Respiratory Therapist. 8. Ability to promote change and facilitate systems thinking. 9. Ability to balance and prioritize diverse management and clinical responsibilities. 10. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 11. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes. 12. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff. 13. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills. 14. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information. 15. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision. 16. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Licensure to practice respiratory care in the State of Nebraska required. Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT) required. Bachelor's degree required within four (4) years of hire date. Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a licensed practitioner with at least one (1) year supervisory or management experience required. Participation in progressive education to advance knowledge/skills/abilities and/or certification in area of expertise preferred. OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS: Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required.
