Job Description

Responsibilities Include:

    Assists the Election Office with voter registration, advance voting, mail ballot elections, provisional ballots, and absentee ballots; reviews registration forms for completeness; processes, verifies, and maintains voter registration applications in statewide voter registration system; assists with absentee ballot requests and absentee address updates and corrections; aids with the processing of advance applications for ballots by mail; runs batch files of entered applications, reconciles number of applications entered to the number of ballot envelopes printed; gathers and secures mail-in ballots until time for processing; researches and reconciles problem applications; updates records from returned mail and confirmation cards; runs validations in the voter system and updates voter records; merges duplicate voter records after research and confirmation.
  • Assists with the registration and voting process for Federal Service and military voters overseas under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA); processes candidate filings, and sends information to the Public Disclosure Commission; processes permanent advanced applications for sick and disabled voters and verifies applications are complete and accurate; enters the permanent status applications into the state-wide voter registration system; corresponds with nursing homes and assisted living locations to facilitate the process of getting voters on the permanent status list; initiates the cancellation of the permanent status when the voter fails to vote in two federal elections according to Kansas Statute.
  • Supports Election Office clerical and administration functions and assists to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, agencies, and other elections jurisdictions; supports the relationship between Johnson County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens and visitors; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; assists with sorting and distribution of Election Office mail according to intricacies of various forms; reviews for omissions of information that requires follow-up; determines reason for undeliverable mail and enters information into the system to begin or continue the voter registration or cancellation process; answers phone calls and responds to text requests and emails; provides forms, applications, and other documents to visitors and voters upon request; assists in the process of publishing statutory notices; assists in supporting the technological functions of the office and election processes; instructs and directs the work of temporary workers and support Staff on projects and seasonal or election needs; assists to recruit, train and schedule election temp workers.
  • Assists with the verification and certification of candidates and initiative petitions and determines the type of petition being turned in; researches the number of signatures to validate a petition; sets the petition up within election software; investigates, processes, scans and indexes felon & mental incapacity documents; assists with the preparation of materials in order for the Johnson County Board of Canvassers to properly certify all elections and compiles canvass documents for record preservation; aids in the process of researching provisional ballots, calling voters, scanning paper ballots, auditing election results and assisting with recounts.

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Community Outreach: Implementing efforts to reach out to voters in Johnson County to help increase voter registration as well as improve voter readiness and the overall voting experience.
  • Data and Systems Analysis: Helping to organize and implement processes for monitoring elections data and integrating data into election systems.


Job Requirements

Required:

  • Two (2) years of experience in election work, public sector service, or relevant field
  • Associate degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Public Administration, Communications or relevant field
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Public Administration, Communications or relevant field
  • Knowledge of election laws and procedures
  • Certified Elections Registration Administrator (CERA) certification
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and various election technologies software
