Founded by Detroit philanthropists George and Ellen Booth in 1904, Cranbrook Educational Community is one of the world's leading centers of education, science, and art. Comprised of a graduate Academy of Art, contemporary Art Museum, Center for Collections and Research, House and Gardens, Institute of Science, and more than 1,600 students attending our Pre-K through 12 independent college preparatory Schools, Cranbrook welcomes thousands of visitors and students to its campus each year. Critics have called Cranbrook "the most enchanted and enchanting setting in America" and in 1989 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. The Director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art is responsible for planning, developing, directing and administering all phases and aspects of the Academy of Art's educational program. The Director will administer operations of the Academy within approved objectives, programs and budgets and be accountable for achievement of strategic goals. The Director will demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the historical importance of the Academy and a commitment to serving as a steward of all Cranbrook institutions for the benefit of current constituencies and future generations.

Knowledge and Experience:



  • A degree in visual arts or architecture, or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • A minimum of ten years related experience, preferably in professional creative practice, art education, or an art museum environment.
  • Demonstrated strengths in the areas of planning, operations, budgeting, human relations and working successfully with both volunteer stakeholders and colleagues.
  • Financial acumen with experience that demonstrates good fiscal and operational management.
  • A demonstrated ability to accomplish broad, visionary assignments as well as complex detailed projects.
  • Must possess the presence, intelligence, demeanor, and verbal and written communication skills to represent Cranbrook effectively.
  • Experience in fundraising for non-profit organizations is desirable.
