The Technical Sales Engineer (TSE) serves as a trusted technical advisor and strategic partner in delivering Itron's meter-to-cash solutions across AMR and AMI technologies. This role is pivotal in building technical credibility, fostering customer trust, and driving solution adoption through collaboration, innovation, and customer-centric engagement. The TSE works closely with Enterprise Client Executives, Sales Specialists, Pre-Sales Engineers, and Professional Services to influence bookings and backlog growth by translating technical value into measurable business outcomes. Duties and Responsibilities Technical Sales & Differentiation
  • Champion Itron's AMI and metering products as the most advanced, lowest-risk, and highest-value solutions in the market.
  • Build authentic, long-term relationships with technical stakeholders including meter shop engineers and operations teams.
  • Deliver engaging workshops, presentations, and demonstrations that highlight product capabilities and operational insights.
  • Collaborate on RFPs and proposals to emphasize Itron's differentiation in performance, interoperability, and risk mitigation.
  • Serve as the technical voice across Itron's metering portfolio, connecting devices, networks, and head-end systems to deliver customer value.
Bookings Enablement
  • Partner with Sales Specialists to convert customer interest into accurate, factory-ready configurations.
  • Lead and support the SpecForm process, ensuring technical precision and manufacturability.
  • Drive initial SpecForm creation and First Article Approvals (FAs) for new accounts and products, enabling smooth transitions to Sales and Services teams.
  • Monitor backlog and factory alignment to optimize bookings impact and timely order conversion.
Knowledge & Market Readiness
  • Maintain deep expertise in Itron's meters, endpoints, AMI/AMR network technologies, and head-end systems (OpenWay, FCS, UIQ, Temetra, IEE).
  • Contribute to internal training, field enablement, and peer mentoring across the CME Solution Sales organization.
  • Provide actionable field feedback to Product Line Management (PLM) to inform roadmap priorities and address recurring configuration needs.
Performance Metrics
  • Influence on bookings and backlog through technical engagement.
  • Strength and depth of customer technical relationships.
  • Effectiveness in differentiating Itron's solutions in competitive environments.
  • Accuracy and completeness of SpecForms and handoffs.
  • Contributions to Sales Specialist enablement and training.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in technical sales, solution engineering, or product support within the Utilities or Energy sector.
  • Strong understanding of AMI/AMR technologies, metering systems, and network architecture.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated agility in managing multiple priorities and adapting to evolving customer needs.
  • Commitment to customer success, accountability, and collaborative problem-solving.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Experience with Itron products and platforms including OpenWay, FCS, UIQ, Temetra, and IEE.
  • Familiarity with SpecForm processes and First Article Approvals.
  • Background in field enablement, technical training, or mentoring.
  • Prior involvement in shaping RFPs or technical proposals.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% for customer engagements and factory collaboration.
Travel : This role requires up to 35-50% travel to support business needsPhysical Demands: Hybrid or remote work model with typical office environment with no unusual physical requirements. The successful candidate's starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills and experience and may vary by location. The base salary range is $75,000 - $188,000. This position is eligible for our sales incentive program. #LI-BJ1
