Organizational Unit Overview
Facilities Services is a unit in Campus Operations Division, which is a part of a broad division of Administration and Finance that includes all aspects of facilities management at East Carolina University. East Carolina University is the third largest university in the University of North Carolina system with approximately 28,000 FTS and a staff of over 6,000. The university is comprised of more than 7 million square feet of facilities located on approximately 1400 acres with physical assets in excess of $1.5 billion. This includes the Main, Health Sciences, and West Research Campuses, and satellite locations throughout North Carolina associated with university programs. Facilities Services has an annual budget in excess of $30 million and employs approximately 500 FTE. Major functions include facilities maintenance and housekeeping services.
Facilities Service's primary purpose is to plan and perform corrective and preventive maintenance functions on all building structures and equipment and utility infrastructure. Corrective maintenance returns equipment to optimal design performance after failure or upon degradation from age, adverse operation conditions, etc. Preventive maintenance minimizes equipment failures and reduces corrective maintenance.
Job Duties
Perform corrective and preventive maintenance (PM) inspections and repairs on life safety equipment including fire detection and suppression systems, fire alarm systems, electronic/mechanical systems and power generators and emergency/stand-by systems. Complete corrective and preventative inspections and repairs on established scheduled intervals. Intervals are based on but are not limited to: manufacturer specifications and pertinent NFPA codes. Utilize computer technology and accurately complete all paperwork associated with the applicable systems testing procedures including but not limited to: NFPA inspection forms, system histories, and work order systems for further required maintenance issues and/or parts requisitions of corrected items found during the inspections and daily time reporting. This position participates in new building examinations and inspections, attends construction conferences with contractors and architects and takes part in final inspections of new facilities. This position's responsibilities are in the areas of maintenance and repair of life safety systems across the campus as well as walk through inspections and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers utilizing bar code technology. This position is classified as an essential position regarding response to adverse weather events.
Minimum Education/Experience
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • At least two years of experience with maintenance of life safety equipment, fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, egress lighting and/or standby emergency generators
  • Previous experience with fire extinguisher inspections
  • Licensure as a Fire Sprinkler Maintenance Technician by the state of North Carolina


License or Certification required by the Department
Candidate should possess a valid NC driver's license and be eligible to operate a state-owned vehicle in accordance with the ECU property policy.
