Department Summary

The BioDiscovery Institute (BDI) within the Division of Research & Innovation at UNT, combines research expertise in life sciences, engineering and data science to discover and innovate next generation biotechnologies while training future scientists to solve health, food, and energy challenges.

Position Overview

The Sr Administrative Coordinator position provides administrative support services for 16 faculty members in the BioDiscovery Institute, one of four UNT Institutes of Research Excellence (IRE). This staff position is supported by the Division of Research and Innovation, similar to the other IREs, and provides an important piece of the administrative infrastructure and leadership for BDI. BDI researchers collectively and consistently represent approximately 10% of all of UNT's annual research expenditures, a prominent enterprise that requires senior administrative coordination.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and five years of highly responsible and varied office administration or business management experience; or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

* Knowledge of accounting/budgeting procedures.

Job Duties



  • Coordinates and provides support to the office/area and acts as a resource to assist in the resolution of various administrative matters including payroll, time keeping, travel.
  • Effectively manages all hiring, on-boarding, and off-boarding activities for postdocs, research scientists, graduate students, RAs, non-student hourly and part-time employees. Also, effectively handles all immigration paperwork for processing J-1, H1-B, or other relevant visas. For visiting scholars this position will obtain all computer security credentials as well as assist with lodging and transportation.
  • Position includes BDI communications and content for social media and website postings. Also includes coordination and administrative support for BDI committees, and monitoring graduate student progress.
  • Coordinates various special projects/meetings/seminars in support of the institute which includes preparation on materials for meetings and conferences, as well as, report assistance as needed.
  • Handles correspondence with VPRI, UNT and COS Administration. Also handles scheduling and calendar maintenance, and other roles such as back up purchaser for Pcard and requisitions.
  • Coordinates Outreach Efforts with campus events and represent BDI - this includes supporting VPRI in Research Day Planning. Include more opportunity for research to be celebrated in general.
  • Provides executive administrative assistance to the institute director as needed.
