Job Summary

The Clinical Research Supervisor I provides leadership and oversight for the Emergency Medicine clinical research program at UC Davis Health. Under the direction of the Research Program Manager, this position supervises all Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) and Junior Specialists within the department, ensuring consistent application of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), human subjects protection regulations, and institutional standards.

This position manages day-to-day clinical research operations, including distribution of workload, staff training, compliance monitoring, and performance evaluation. The Supervisor I also supports departmental research initiatives through protocol feasibility review, study start-up coordination, fiscal oversight, and process improvement. This position requires an in-depth understanding of clinical research in an acute care environment, with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams involving faculty investigators, research nurses, CRCs, regulatory staff, and external sponsors.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific, health-related, or administrative discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification as a Clinical Research Professional (SoCRA or ACRP) required within one year of appointment.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in clinical research coordination, including at least 1 year of leadership, mentoring, or supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of FDA, OHRP, and ICH/GCP regulations for human subjects research.
  • Experience conducting or overseeing multi-site or industry-sponsored clinical trials.
  • Experience with Epic, REDCap, and electronic data capture systems.
  • Experience collaborating with physician investigators and clinical staff in a hospital-based environment.
  • Advanced understanding of clinical research conduct, data integrity, and patient safety in emergency or acute care settings.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate research staff with professionalism and consistency.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and prioritization skills; ability to manage multiple studies simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with multidisciplinary teams, sponsors, and patients.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Epic, REDCap, and clinical trial management systems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and work independently under limited supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current certification as a Clinical Research Professional (SoCRA or ACRP).
  • Master's degree in Clinical Research Administration, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Prior supervisory experience in an academic medical center or hospital-based research environment.
  • Experience developing research standard operating procedures (SOPs) and implementing process improvement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with UC Davis Health systems, policies, and compliance frameworks.

Department Overview

The Department of Emergency Medicine at UC Davis Health is a nationally recognized academic program dedicated to excellence in clinical care, research, and education. The department conducts a broad portfolio of industry-sponsored, state and federally funded, and investigator-initiated clinical studies across a variety of emergency care disciplines.
The department's mission is to improve emergency care through innovation, evidence-based practice, and community impact. Research is conducted in a dynamic, fast-paced clinical environment serving a diverse patient population and emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration with other departments and research centers across UC Davis.

Department Specific Job Scope

This position supervises four full-time Clinical Research Coordinators and two Junior Specialists and provides day-to-day operational leadership for all departmental clinical research activities under the direction of the Research Program Manager.

The incumbent ensures compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations; manages staff scheduling and study assignments; and supports onboarding, mentorship, and competency development of CRCs. The supervisor collaborates with investigators to assess new protocols for feasibility and resource needs, assists with IRB and contract coordination, and ensures consistent implementation of research workflows in the Emergency Department.

This position also partners with administrative, fiscal, and regulatory units across the School of Medicine to align departmental practices with UCDH research policy, improve efficiency, and strengthen the infrastructure supporting emergency medicine research.
