Overview

Cummings School provides DVM, master's and PhD degrees, and advanced clinical training programs. The Cummings School Veterinary Group (CSVG) is comprised of 7 teaching hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic laboratories and Tufts Veterinary Outreach Clinic. Tufts Veterinary Outreach Clinics (TVOC) is part of the Office of Community Engagement and Outreach and provides outreach opportunities for students and faculty to provide routine preventative services to clients and students in need. Operating in partnership with the Worcester Housing Authority and other community partners, TVOC provides care for those who cannot otherwise obtain it as well as service-learning opportunities for students.


What You'll Do

Working under the direction of, and supporting the Director of TVOC, the Outreach Veterinarian works collaboratively to oversee the veterinary care provided by the students to animals of identified clients in need. The Outreach Veterinarian is also responsible for the organization of the clinics, ensuring that clients are properly identified and booked for their appointments, that proper medical records are maintained, and that students are properly supervised.

Essential Functions in the role will be:

Outreach Clinic Program Management

  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Tufts Veterinary Outreach Clinics and the Office of Community Engagement and Outreach to provide service-learning opportunities for veterinary students through veterinary outreach activities for clients in need.
  • Supervises students providing veterinary care to owned animals as part of Tufts Veterinary Outreach Clinics in the role of lead supervising veterinarians.
  • Recruits volunteer veterinarians from the community for each Veterinary Outreach Clinic.
  • Works with Outreach Selective faculty (Megan Rokop & Yuki Nakayama) to recruit students for each clinic.
  • Works with Worcester Housing Authority (WHA) contacts to advertise clinics to WHA residents, including:
    • Distributing posters in communal residential areas
    • Distributing individual letters for clients with pets due for rabies vaccines
    • Coordinating transport for residents at risk of eviction from other WHA residential sites to clinics
    • Coordinates transportation to outreach clinics for residents who cannot attend clinic at their residential site, and are overdue for rabies vaccines.
    • Responds to Voicemails and Emails for WHA outreach clinics.
    • Coordinates patient referral to emergency, spay/neuter, and low-cost primary care services.

Clinic Responsibilities

  • Staffs outreach clinic day as the lead supervising DVM at 4 - 6 Tufts Veterinary Outreach Clinic days at Worcester Housing Authority (WHA) residential site throughout the year.
  • Works with student coordinator to maintain inventory of supplies as needed.
  • Maintains medical records for all patients seen on Stringsoft.
  • Generates and distributes rabies certificates.

Clinical assets planning and management

  • Provides oversight and management of clinical materials, space, and clinical assets of TVOC.
  • Works with student coordinator to maintain inventory of supplies as needed.
  • Helps to coordinate purchasing.

General Leadership and Communication Responsibilities

  • Facilitates and coordinates communication and collaboration between Cummings School, Worcester Housing Authority and other partners, students, and clients.
  • Delivers operational management including supervision, work direction, team-building, and problem-solving. Serves as a patient and understanding mentor to students.
  • Engages directly in clinical services and educational activities of TVOC.
  • Other responsibilities and duties as required and requested from time to time by the school and university leadership.


What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Must hold a DVM degree
  • Must hold or be eligible for a Massachusetts veterinary license,
  • Must hold a Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration and be eligible for DEA registration
  • Rabies Vaccination
  • Minimum of five years' experience in small animal primary care practice and demonstrated good veterinary skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and capable of managing multiple competing priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Must be able to work independently, with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience teaching or supervising DVM students considered an asset
  • Previous experience working with disadvantaged populations considered an asset
  • Experience or knowledge of electronic medical record systems considered an asset
  • Flexibility with work schedule is needed, as occasional weekend work may be required


Pay Range

Minimum $96,500.00, Midpoint $120,600.00, Maximum $144,800.00

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
